The Thing (1982) leaves MacReady and Childs’ identities unresolved in its final scene. Director John Carpenter says he knows which of them was human, but he has refused to reveal the answer. The film’s earlier screenplay ending and a separately tested alternate ending are different from the version released in theaters—and neither makes the final scene’s ambiguity official canon.
Who was the Thing at the end of The Thing?
The released film does not tell viewers whether MacReady or Childs is infected. Both men are alive in the Antarctic ruins, and neither the dialogue nor the images establish a definitive answer. Carpenter has described the uncertainty as intentional: audiences wanted to know who the Thing was, but he wanted to end the film with that question open. In a 2024 interview, he said, “Audiences didn’t like the ending. They wanted to know who the Thing was – which was left up in the air. They hated that but I don’t care, that’s the way I wanted to end it.” (The Guardian, March 25, 2024.)

Carpenter has also said he knows who was and was not the Thing, but will not disclose it: “I know, but I’m not telling you.” His private answer does not turn the released scene into a solved puzzle for viewers. (SYFY WIRE, updated September 23, 2024; ComicBook.com, October 11, 2023.)
Was MacReady the Thing? Was Childs infected?
Neither identity is confirmed. Fans have proposed clues in the scene, including the light reflected in the characters’ eyes, but Carpenter rejected cinematographer Dean Cundey’s eye-light technique as a way to identify who is human in the final scene. Cundey’s recollections and other crew members’ interpretations help explain why viewers keep debating the ending; they are not a definitive on-screen answer. Producer Stuart Cohen has said the film contains no minute identity clues. That view aligns with the practical limit of the scene: viewers can weigh possible interpretations, but the film does not authorize one as the answer. The ending is unresolved on screen, not a hidden test with a confirmed solution. (SYFY WIRE, updated September 23, 2024.)
What was the original ending of The Thing?
“Original ending” can refer to two different versions discussed by Carpenter. One was Bill Lancaster’s screenplay ending; the other was an alternate version the filmmakers tested. Neither is the ending in the released film.
Rank #2
| Version | What happens | How it differs from the released ending |
|---|---|---|
| Lancaster’s early screenplay ending | MacReady and Charles both become Things and are rescued in spring. Carpenter recalled the rescue as a casual emergence and greeting. | Carpenter considered it too glib and rejected it. |
| Separately tested alternate | MacReady destroys the Thing, sits alone in the cold, and the film cuts to black without Childs appearing. | Carpenter said audience reaction did not differ from reaction to the released ending. |
| Released film | MacReady and Childs sit together in the cold, with their identities uncertain to viewers. | The scene leaves the question open. |
Carpenter’s account of the screenplay and the tested version is recorded in an interview with Creative Screenwriting. Keeping them separate matters: the screenplay version has both men turn, while the tested alternate leaves MacReady alone after destroying the creature. (Creative Screenwriting, interview with John Carpenter.)
Is there a sequel to John Carpenter’s The Thing?
Carpenter’s comments reported in June 2023 described discussions about what could be done with The Thing, not a confirmed sequel in production. He speculated that MacReady and Childs might still be alive and said, “I just think there’s another bit of a story to tell there, which I’m not going to tell you about.” The report did not announce a greenlight, production start, or release date, so the remarks should be read as interest and possibility rather than a definite film plan. Carpenter has also said he would adapt Dark Horse’s three-book comic continuation, which begins with MacReady and Childs crossing the ice and being discovered by a ship. That is a comic continuation he identified as story material—not evidence that a film adaptation has been made or approved. (SYFY WIRE, June 2, 2023.)

No. The 2011 film is a prequel: it follows events at the Norwegian camp whose discovery leads into the 1982 story. It does not pick up after MacReady and Childs’ final scene or reveal which man was human. (SYFY WIRE, June 2, 2023.)
