Lawrence also said he believed he had entered a committed relationship before he was ready and that he and Cope did not share the same ideologies. What was happening when he made the remarks
Lawrence and Cope met while working on the Lifetime movie My Husband’s Secret Brother and married in May 2022. They separated in June 2024, and Cope filed for divorce in August, according to Us Weekly’s later timeline. When Lawrence spoke on the podcast, the relationship was under public scrutiny, including circulating allegations about his relationship with a co-star.

The spouses also disputed a public claim about their family. Lawrence said Cope did not accept his older daughters; Cope disputed that claim. The available reporting does not establish either account as an uncontested fact. Us Weekly’s December 2024 coverage recounts the filing and dispute.
How the relationship changed after the divorce filing
The August 2024 filing did not become the couple’s lasting status. Us Weekly reported that Lawrence and Cope had reconciled by December 2024 and that Cope filed to dismiss her divorce petition. In a July 2025 interview with E! News, Lawrence said they chose to work on the relationship, describing the effort this way: “Things take a lot of work and a lot of dedication and reworking and retooling.” That, too, was Lawrence’s account of their decision and process.
