Joe Rogan’s Bondo Ape Clip: What Happened When a Primatologist Challenged Him

A caller identifying herself as a primatologist challenged Joe Rogan’s claims about the Bondo ape. Here’s what Futurism reported, what the science claim was, and why the clip has limits as a credibility test.

The resurfaced clip concerns a dispute over the Bondo, or Bili, ape: Joe Rogan discusses claims about an unusual Congolese ape, then argues with a caller who identifies herself as a primatologist. Futurism reports that Rogan insulted and mocked her after she challenged the idea that it was a distinct ape. The exchange is a pointed example of how he handled this challenge—not, by itself, a verdict on his credibility across every subject.

What happens in the Bondo ape clip?

In its report, updated January 15, 2022, Futurism describes Rogan discussing for several minutes a purported Congolese ape said to walk upright and behave unusually aggressively. A caller who identified herself as “Allison” challenged the claim that the Bondo ape was a distinct kind of ape. Futurism calls her a Floridian primatologist, but its account does not establish further details about her identity or credentials.

Futurism reports that Rogan called the caller an idiot, told her to look it up online, and continued mocking her after she disconnected. That account makes the clip notable less for disagreement itself than for the way the disagreement was handled: an appeal to expertise was met with dismissal rather than a careful examination of the evidence.

What is the scientific issue?

The name Bondo or Bili ape has been used for chimpanzees observed in the Bili region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The question raised in the exchange is whether these animals represented a distinct “super-ape” or belonged to a known chimpanzee group.

Futurism says DNA testing in the early 2000s classified the Bondo/Bili apes as common chimpanzees, rather than a separate species. The underlying genetic study is not assessed here, so that scientific-history detail should be understood as the outlet’s account, not an independent review of the original data. On that reported evidence, the caller’s challenge was consistent with the classification Futurism describes.

Can this clip settle whether Rogan is credible?

No. It can support a judgment about this particular exchange: as Futurism describes it, Rogan responded to a scientific challenge with insults and ridicule instead of establishing the claim or addressing the caller’s argument. That is relevant when assessing his conduct as a host, but a short, selected clip cannot measure the accuracy of everything he says on unrelated topics.

A broader credibility assessment should separate several questions: Was a specific claim accurate? How did Rogan respond when challenged? Did he later correct or qualify it? And how representative is the example? The Bondo discussion bears most directly on the second question. It does not establish what Rogan knew about the subject beforehand or provide a comprehensive record of his reliability.

Other documented examples need their own context

There are separate, reported episodes in which Rogan qualified his authority or was criticized over a scientific interpretation. In April 2021, Axios reported that he walked back comments suggesting healthy young people did not need COVID-19 vaccination. Axios quoted him saying, “I’m not a doctor, I’m a f***-ing moron,” and “I’m not a respected source of information, even for me.” Those remarks were made in response to that specific controversy; they are not a blanket disclaimer that resolves whether any other claim is reliable.

In a separate example, an August 2021 Forbes interview quoted Pennsylvania State University biology and entomology professor Andrew Read criticizing Rogan’s interpretation of Read’s vaccine-evolution study. Read said, “Joe Rogan is getting this completely wrong,” and explained that the chicken-vaccine research involved a different virus and vaccine situation from COVID-19 vaccines. Forbes updated the article in February 2025. This is evidence about a separate interpretation, not about the Bondo ape discussion.

When was the clip recorded?

The original episode and air date have not been established in the available reporting. Futurism said the timing was unclear and suggested only that it might date from roughly a decade before its January 2022 report. That estimate is not a confirmed date, and no episode number can be safely assigned from the information cited here.
