In a January 3, 2024, social media post, former Rascal Flatts guitarist Joe Don Rooney said he was healthy and sober and denied that he was transitioning to be a woman. Those statements describe what Rooney said then; they do not establish his status today.
What did Joe Don Rooney say in 2024?
Rooney returned to social media after, as he put it, a couple of years without engaging with fans and friends there. His post addressed his health, sobriety and rumors about his gender identity. The Advocate quoted him saying: “And NO, I’m not transitioning to be a woman. That thought has never entered my mind. Nothing against the trans community whatsoever but I needed to set the record straight.”

He also said he was healthy and sober. The Advocate reported that he described himself as 28 months sober at the time. That duration is a report of his January 2024 statement, not a current sobriety timeline.
What did he say about the crash and recovery?
Rooney’s post also addressed a September 2021 crash and the personal crisis and recovery that followed. Us Weekly’s January 3, 2024, coverage discussed the crash and subsequent DUI charge. The Los Angeles Times reported the next day that Rooney said his sobriety journey began with four months of treatment at a Utah facility. These details are attributed to Rooney and contemporaneous reporting; they do not independently verify his sobriety.

What is known about his status now?
The January 2024 reports establish what Rooney said in that post, but they do not establish his sobriety or statements after that update. It would be inaccurate to turn his 2024 disclosure into a claim about his status in October 2026.
