Joanna Stern’s YouTube channel is part of a larger project. After leaving The Wall Street Journal, the consumer-technology journalist launched New Things in April 2026 as an independent venture built around a newsletter and video, with technology coverage centered on how devices, apps and services affect people.
What is Joanna Stern’s New Things?
Stern introduced New Things on April 22, 2026, calling it “a newsletter, a YouTube channel, a whole experiment.” The launch post describes a new publishing venture rather than a move into online video alone. In a May 11, 2026, Decoder episode listing, Stern is described as having left the Journal to start New Things; the listing links to her launch post and video.

What will she cover on YouTube?
Stern says New Things will cover consumer technology: devices, apps and services, including phones and products from Apple and Google. Her stated editorial question is not just what a product does, but who the technology is for and how it affects people.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That lens connects the video work to Stern’s earlier journalism. In a reported Semafor interview, she described continuing to help people navigate a complicated technology landscape while changing the formats she uses to do it. She also singled out stunts as one kind of video she wants to keep making.
How will New Things be published?
Stern announced a twice-weekly newsletter plan: Wednesdays for larger technology stories and new videos, and Fridays for shorter, lighter material. That is the schedule she described at launch, not confirmation of the venture’s current publishing cadence.

The mix of newsletter and YouTube gives Stern two formats for the same stated subject: technology in everyday life. The launch announcement does not establish the channel’s audience size, later upload frequency or commercial results.
How does the venture plan to make money?
In the launch post, Stern says New Things will earn money through newsletter subscriptions and sponsorships. She named Mercury as the exclusive sponsor at launch and said sponsored material would be labeled and would not influence editorial coverage. Those are the publisher’s stated plans and standards, not independently audited findings.
How does her book connect to the launch?
Stern’s book I Am Not a Robot is tied to her effort to use AI in many parts of her life for a year. The launch post presents that experience as a source of her technology coverage, which fits New Things’ focus on what technology means in human terms. Stern’s launch post includes more about the book.

What advice did Casey Neistat give Stern?
In her launch post, Stern recounts advice from YouTuber Casey Neistat: “Being human is not enough. You have to only be you. There’s eight billion other humans out there. What do you have to offer me? And only you have that.” The line speaks to the challenge of developing a distinctive voice as a creator; “eight billion” is part of Neistat’s quote, not a population statistic offered by Stern’s announcement.
