Spoilers for Outer Banks Season 4, including the Part 1 reveal and Part 2 finale. JJ Maybank’s biological parents are Larissa Genrette and Chandler Groff. Luke is the man who raised him as his adoptive father, and Wes Genrette is JJ’s maternal grandfather. The discovery ties JJ to a wealthy Kook family by birth—but it does not erase his upbringing or the loyalty he chooses to show the Pogues.
Who are JJ’s biological parents?
JJ’s biological mother is Larissa Genrette, and his biological father is Chandler Groff. Luke is JJ’s adoptive father: he raised JJ, but is not his biological parent. Through Larissa, JJ is also Wes Genrette’s grandson.
That distinction matters. The reveal changes what JJ knows about his ancestry, not who raised him or the family bonds he has built with the Pogues.
How does JJ discover the truth?
- Wes leaves JJ a clue. In Episode 2, after Wes Genrette dies under mysterious circumstances, JJ receives a letter addressed to “Master JJ Maybank.” It tells him to ask Luke about “Albatross.”
- Luke explains the name. JJ tracks Luke down and asks about Albatross. Luke says it was the boat on which Larissa Genrette died, then tells JJ that Larissa was his mother.
- Groff confirms it later. Netflix’s Season 4 recap says Groff confirms his paternity to JJ in Episode 7. Luke delivers the initial revelation; Groff’s later confirmation makes the biological connection direct.

What does the reveal change about JJ’s identity?
JJ has a biological connection to the Genrette family and, through them, to the Kook world that contrasts with his life as one of the Pogues. Co-creator Shannon Burke described the reversal as an extreme choice: “That was the most extreme thing we could think of: That JJ’s actually a Kook.”
But lineage does not automatically change where JJ belongs. His adoption by Luke and his difficult upbringing remain part of his story; Netflix describes Luke as abusive. The new information does not undo that history or resolve its effects. Instead, it puts JJ’s birth family in tension with the identity and friendships he has formed.

That tension comes into focus in the finale. When Groff threatens Kiara, JJ trades him the Blue Crown for her safety, telling Groff he already has what he wants. Netflix’s interview about JJ’s finale describes the choice as JJ valuing his friends over the treasure.

After JJ gives Groff the Blue Crown to protect Kiara, Groff stabs him. Actor Rudy Pankow and the creators describe JJ’s willingness to risk himself for his friends as consistent with his character. Pankow said, “He lives his life to the utmost fullest, and I don’t think he regrets any part of it.”

The finale’s choice gives the identity twist its emotional point: JJ may learn he was born into the Genrette family, but when forced to choose, he acts for the people he considers his own. Netflix’s finale interview discusses the scene and Pankow’s perspective.
