Jimmy Kimmel addressed President Donald Trump’s announcement that Kristi Noem was leaving as homeland security secretary in his March 5, 2026, Jimmy Kimmel Live! monologue. He framed the firing as a reality-show elimination, mocked Noem’s new special envoy role and returned to controversy over a $220 million Department of Homeland Security advertising campaign.
What Kimmel said about Noem’s departure
Kimmel treated the news like a television competition. He called it a “red wedding” moment and a “shocking elimination on the ‘Celebrity Appresident.’” He also joked that Noem’s announced next job was “her brand-new, completely made-up job.” That last line was a punchline about the appointment, not a factual description of the role.
“I think I speak for all of us when I say, we wish Kristi luck in her brand-new, completely made-up job,” Kimmel said in the March 5 opening monologue. Variety’s March 6 report includes the monologue video and quotes from the segment.
Why the $220 million ad campaign came up
The monologue also targeted a DHS advertising campaign featuring Noem. Kimmel joked about the department’s description of the campaign as the “most successful ad campaign in U.S. history,” then quipped: “You know, the funniest thing would be if they deport her to El Salvador.” The $220 million figure for the campaign was reported by the Associated Press and Variety.

The campaign had drawn scrutiny during congressional hearings. The AP reported that Noem told lawmakers Trump knew about it in advance, while Trump disputed having approved it. Those are competing accounts; neither should be presented as settled fact on the basis of the reports.
What happened with Noem’s job
Trump announced Noem’s departure on March 5, 2026, after mounting criticism and two days of congressional hearings. He said she would become a “Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas,” a new security initiative focused on the Western Hemisphere, and nominated Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin to replace her. The AP reported that Noem was the first member of Trump’s Cabinet to leave during his second term at that point.

Beyond the ad campaign and her testimony, scrutiny involved the department’s immigration enforcement and disaster response. Kimmel’s segment made the personnel announcement and its political context into late-night comedy; the jokes themselves are not evidence about the merits or details of the new envoy role.
