Are federal offices or post offices closed today?
The Carter mourning-day closures were specific to January 9, 2025. On that date, federal offices were ordered closed and federal employees excused from duty, except personnel needed for national security, defense, or other essential public business. OPM’s memorandum also set out pay and leave treatment for that date; it does not establish a recurring closure. Read OPM’s January 2025 memorandum.
USPS likewise closed post offices and suspended regular mail delivery for January 9, 2025, with package delivery limited. Those service changes were for the Carter observance, not October 8, 2026. USPS’s notice for the observance describes the arrangements.

Federal Reserve payment services
Federal Reserve Financial Services lists Columbus Day, October 12, 2026, in its holiday schedule and provides FedACH processing timing around the holiday. That schedule concerns Federal Reserve payment services; it does not establish whether every private bank closes or how an individual bank handles customer services. Check the Federal Reserve holiday schedule.
