Jimmy Barnes announced his Australian Hell of a Time theatre tour on 11 February 2024, after recovering from a serious infection and undergoing aortic valve surgery in December 2023. The intimate regional run opened in Perth on 12 June and concluded at the Sydney Opera House on 18 August 2024; it has now ended.
What was the Hell of a Time tour?
Barnes described the show as a stripped-back national theatre tour combining songs and short stories. It was linked to the 30th anniversary of his seventh solo album, Flesh and Wood. The tour’s title and format marked a return to the stage after his 2023 illness and surgery, rather than a current tour announcement.

The official announcement said Flesh and Wood entered the Australian charts at No. 2 in December 1993, achieved triple-platinum sales, spent eight weeks in the Top 10 and four months in the Top 50, and produced four singles. These are figures reported in Barnes’s announcement; it did not name the chart provider or certification authority. The album featured collaborations with Joe Cocker, Diesel, Ross Wilson, Don Walker, The Badloves and Archie Roach.
Barnes’s label, Bloodlines Music, also announced a limited-edition sand-coloured vinyl reissue, with copies to be personally signed at the time. That announcement does not establish that the edition is still available.

Why did Barnes postpone touring?
In his official 11 February 2024 announcement, Barnes said he had been admitted to hospital on 27 November 2023 with bacterial pneumonia. He said he then developed staphylococcal bacteraemia and an abscess at an old operation site, followed by endocarditis affecting his aortic valve. He underwent urgent surgery to replace the valve on 13 December 2023.
Barnes said doctors had cleared him to increase exercise as he prepared to tour. “Every day I’m getting stronger. Every day I’m pushing myself a little bit further,” he said. He added: “I’m excited about getting back on stage, in front of the band and playing for you all.” Those comments describe his recovery and plans in 2024, not his current health.

Did the shows sell out?
A 21 February 2024 official update said five shows sold out within a day of going on sale and described further sold-out dates and added performances. That is a report about ticket sales at the time, not an indication of present availability for this completed tour.

In that follow-up, Barnes said: “I’ve visited all my doctors now and they all tell me the same thing. I am ready to rock.” The statement belongs to the 2024 announcement context and is not a current medical assessment.
