Jim Shooter, the comics writer and former Marvel Comics editor-in-chief whose career began with DC’s Legion of Super-Heroes as a teenager, died on June 30, 2025, at age 73. Contemporary reports attributed his death to esophageal cancer. His legacy includes influential comics and creator-focused policies, as well as sharp disputes over his demanding approach to editorial leadership.

Who was Jim Shooter?

Shooter was an American comics writer and editor whose professional career began while he was still a teenager. On his own website, he said he sold DC Comics a Legion of Super-Heroes story at 13 and went on to write Superboy, The Legion of Super-Heroes, Superman and other titles: JimShooter.com. ComicBook.com identifies his first writing and penciling credit as Adventure Comics #346 in 1966, when he was 14. The accounts describe different milestones—selling early work and receiving a published credit—rather than a single agreed-upon starting point. ComicBook.com’s report traces his path from those DC stories to Marvel’s editorial leadership.

When did Jim Shooter die, and how old was he?

Shooter died on June 30, 2025, aged 73. ComicBook.com reported the date and age, and Legacy.com’s obituary also gives those details. Legacy.com reports that he had esophageal cancer; ComicBook.com quoted writer Mark Waid saying Shooter had been battling the disease for some time.

What was Shooter’s role at Marvel?

Shooter returned to Marvel in the 1970s and became the company’s editor-in-chief in 1978. During his tenure, Marvel published major work on Uncanny X-Men, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Thor and Amazing Spider-Man. His own account says he entered Marvel leadership hoping to improve conditions for creators, and he lists royalties, rights and benefits among the changes he introduced. His biographical statement offers his perspective on those priorities.

A major crossover—and a contested tenure

Shooter conceived and wrote 1984’s Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars. ComicBook.com describes it as the first company-wide crossover in comics history. His editorial leadership also brought conflict: Legacy.com reports that he clashed with colleagues and that Marvel fired him in 1987. The record is therefore not a simple story of either reform or control. Shooter pursued a clear editorial vision, while his forceful management style generated lasting criticism alongside recognition of his contributions.

Writer J.M. DeMatteis, quoted by Legacy.com, captured the dual edge of that approach: “Jim’s greatest strength was that he had a clear vision of what Marvel should be, how a story should be told, and he pursued it wholeheartedly.”

What did Jim Shooter do after Marvel?

After leaving Marvel, Shooter remained active in comics and helped launch and lead independent publishers, including Valiant and Defiant. His post-Marvel career extended his influence beyond the company whose editorial direction had made him a central figure in the industry. The Grand Comics Database catalogs his work across a broad range of comics: Grand Comics Database.
