Reports said Cathriona White, Jim Carrey’s former partner, had studied Scientology. The Church of Scientology rejected attempts to connect that reported study to her death, and the available reporting does not establish that Scientology caused or contributed to it. White died in 2015, aged 30; the Los Angeles coroner later ruled her death a suicide following an overdose of prescription drugs.

What was Cathriona White’s reported connection to Scientology?

White was an Irish makeup artist and Carrey’s on-and-off partner. In September 2015, Scientology journalist Tony Ortega reported that she had been involved with the Church, attributing details about her courses and training to sources he interviewed. Ortega’s account was also summarized by Us Weekly.

Those reports document what sources told journalists; they are not an independently verified church membership record. It is therefore more accurate to say White was reported to have studied Scientology than to state as established fact that she was a Scientologist.

Did Scientology have anything to do with her death?

The reporting establishes no causal connection. After accounts of White’s reported study circulated, a Church of Scientology spokesperson objected to linking it to her death. As quoted by E! News, the spokesperson said: “Saying that somebody was studying Scientology in the past and connecting that to a suicide is like saying a person who had previously studied the Bible committed suicide.” That statement represents the Church’s response; it is not a finding about the cause of death. E! News reported the response and the allegations.

White was found dead in Sherman Oaks in September 2015. Initial coverage described the death as an apparent suicide while the autopsy was pending. In July 2016, subsequent reporting said the Los Angeles coroner had ruled her death a suicide following an overdose of prescription drugs. CBS Los Angeles’ initial report and its later report on the coroner’s determination reflect that change in certainty.

What was Carrey’s relationship to White?

Reports said White and Carrey met in 2012, had an on-and-off relationship, and resumed it in 2015 before separating again shortly before her death. Carrey publicly expressed grief after she died. CBS Los Angeles quoted him describing her as “a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled.” His words convey his personal response, not evidence about the circumstances of her death.

What happened with the wrongful-death lawsuit?

In September 2016, White’s estranged husband filed a wrongful-death lawsuit alleging that Carrey obtained and supplied medication. Those were allegations, not findings of fact; Carrey disputed them. In February 2018, ABC News reported that the plaintiffs had dismissed the suit and Carrey was no longer facing the action. A dismissal does not establish whether the disputed allegations were true or false. ABC News covered the dismissal.

Quick Recap

How to read the accounts

  • Reported involvement: Ortega’s account relied on sources he interviewed, and Us Weekly repeated it. The Church’s public response addressed the inference being drawn from that reporting.
  • Changing certainty about the death: Early reports called it an apparent suicide pending an autopsy; later coverage reported the coroner’s ruling.
  • Litigation claims: The wrongful-death complaint made allegations that Carrey disputed. The later dismissal was a procedural outcome, not a verdict on those claims.
