In 2022, he said he was “fairly serious” about retiring but also described taking a break and left open the possibility of returning for the right script. In December 2024, while promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 3, he said he thought he had been talking more about “power-resting.” His comments describe a willingness to pause work, not a confirmed retirement or a confirmed next project.
What Carrey meant by “power-resting”
In a December 2024 interview with ComicBook.com, Carrey revisited the retirement remarks he had made two years earlier. “You can’t be definite about these things,” he said. “I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting. Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people you really enjoy working with, things tend to change.”

“Power-resting” was his way of describing a break from acting while remaining open to work that appealed to him. He did not say that he had permanently retired, nor did he announce a specific project in the clarification.
How his 2022 comments differ from the 2024 clarification
In April 2022, during promotion for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey told Access Hollywood, “Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious.” But the same remarks included qualifications: he said he might return if a script felt important and that he was taking a break. The earlier wording is reproduced in the 2024 ComicBook.com report and recapped by Yahoo Entertainment, republishing People.

| How firm did it sound? | He said he was “fairly serious” about retiring, while also calling it a break. | He said he could not be definite and thought he had meant “power-resting.” |
| What could bring him back? | A script that felt important. | A good idea or people he enjoyed working with. |
| Did he confirm a new project? | No. | No; the remarks described conditions under which he might work again. |
Do The Mask or Grinch comments mean a sequel is happening?
No. Carrey has discussed returning as the Mask only if the idea were right, according to ComicBook.com’s coverage. Reporting by The Independent likewise describes conditional interest in revisiting the Grinch, including motion capture as a possible alternative to the demanding makeup process. Neither report establishes that a sequel is confirmed or in production.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Jim Carrey retired now?
The 2024 interview does not settle Carrey’s plans after that conversation. It shows that he regarded his earlier statement as less final than it sounded and remained open to a compelling idea or collaborators he liked. The available comments support describing his position as conditional—not calling him definitively retired, and not claiming a new film is underway.
