He did not publicly describe the decision as a firing. The available reporting instead points to a programming dispute: CNN offered Acosta a new two-hour program from midnight to 2 a.m. Eastern Time. CNN said the decision was not politically motivated. The language was widely understood as a reference to the political climate and to Acosta’s history of challenging powerful figures. However, he did not identify a specific person in the on-air remarks as the direct target of the word “tyrant.” It is therefore more accurate to describe the statement as a political warning or parting message than as a coded announcement about the reason for his departure.

Why “sudden” and “cryptic” are misleading descriptions
