Police initially booked her on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer, but prosecutors later filed two different felony charges. In March 2026, the Los Angeles Police Commission found the officers’ decision to shoot was out of policy. That administrative finding does not decide Lauren’s criminal case.
Why was Jillian Lauren shot by police?
On April 8, 2025, Los Angeles Police Department officers were assisting the California Highway Patrol in a search for three suspects who had fled a hit-and-run crash into an Eagle Rock residential area. Lauren was not identified as one of the hit-and-run suspects. Officers encountered her with a handgun at her property during the search.

According to LAPD’s account, as quoted by The Independent, “The officers ordered Shriner to drop the handgun numerous times. However, she refused. Shriner then pointed the handgun at the officers,” prompting at least one officer to open fire. This is the department’s account of the confrontation, not a court finding.
Lauren retreated into her home and was later taken to a hospital. The available reporting does not establish a final judicial finding about the disputed details of the encounter.

Was Jillian Lauren charged with attempted murder?
Not as the later charges filed by prosecutors. Police initially booked Lauren on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer. On May 13, 2025, prosecutors instead filed two felony counts: willful discharge of a firearm in a grossly negligent manner and assault with a semiautomatic firearm. Lauren pleaded not guilty, according to The Los Angeles Times and The Independent. A booking allegation and charges later filed by prosecutors are separate procedural events.
What happened to the charges against Jillian Lauren?
In December 2025, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge granted Lauren diversion due to mental-health issues, the March 2026 Los Angeles Times report says. The reporting available here does not establish whether she completed diversion or whether the charges were dismissed. A diversion order should not be described as a dismissal without confirming the case’s current disposition.

The commission’s review concerns police conduct under department policy. It is an administrative finding, not a ruling on whether Lauren committed the charged offenses, and it does not itself dismiss or resolve the criminal case.
