What is Jigra about?
Directed as an “emotional action thriller” in Dharma Productions’ synopsis, Jigra follows Satya (Alia Bhatt) as she tries to free her younger brother Ankur (Vedang Raina) from a prison in the fictional country of Hanshi Dao. Ankur faces execution after a drug conviction, turning Satya’s determination to rescue him into the engine of the film’s thriller plot.

Why does the sibling story struggle to land?
Ramnath’s central criticism is that the film asks viewers to feel the force of a sister’s sacrifice without first making the siblings’ bond vivid enough. The urgency of Satya’s mission is clear; the emotional history that should make it devastating is less so. Ramnath asks, “Where are the heart-tugging moments that convince us that when a young man is jailed in a foreign prison, his sister will move heaven and earth to rescue him?”
That gap matters because the rescue is not simply a plot objective: the sibling relationship is meant to give the action its emotional purpose. Without stronger groundwork, the film’s escalating danger can feel like a thriller operating separately from the family drama that is supposed to anchor it.

Does the prison-break thriller work?
For Ramnath, the story’s later developments become increasingly implausible, with the final hour feeling better suited to a spy thriller than to the emotional drama established at the outset. The rescue plan, in her view, stretches credibility rather than building suspense. The film’s 155-minute runtime also feels burdened by exposition, which slows momentum instead of making the long build-up pay off.
What works: performances and relationships
Ramnath finds Bhatt convincing as both a protective older sister and an action heroine. The review also praises Manoj Pahwa, Rahul Ravindran, and Ankur Khanna, and points to the father-daughter connection between Satya and Bhatia as an effective relationship within the film. These performances give individual scenes life, even when the larger story does not fully connect them.

How does the music shape the film?
The strongest emotional response, Ramnath argues, comes from “Tenu Sang Rakhna” rather than the scenes meant to establish the siblings’ bond. That contrast reinforces her broader complaint: the film’s music can communicate tenderness more directly than its central relationship does. She also finds the references and older songs feel like padding in this instance. Apple Music lists the soundtrack album as seven songs, running 21 minutes, released October 15, 2024, and credited to Saregama India Ltd.
Verdict: strong pieces, an unconvincing whole
Jigra offers an arresting premise, capable performances, and moments of musical feeling, but those elements do not add up to the affecting sister-led rescue story it promises. Ramnath’s summary is that “Jigra has many discrete elements that work in isolation but don’t quite come together.”
