It follows Leila as she prepares for an estranged friend’s birthday party while caught in a self-destructive eating-disorder cycle. Damouni described writing, acting in, and directing the film as “cathartic”—a reflection on making a story rooted in her own experience, not a claim that filmmaking treats an eating disorder.
What is Jessica Damouni’s short film Be Good about?
The Boston Palestine Film Festival describes Be Good as a 2021 narrative short running 13 minutes. Its protagonist, Leila, spends the day getting ready for an estranged friend’s birthday party. Her idea of being “good” becomes part of a self-destructive cycle, and a tense phone call with her mother deepens the crisis. The festival’s catalog entry identifies Damouni as the director.
The party preparations give the story a concrete frame for an internal struggle: ordinary tasks unfold alongside the pressure Leila places on herself. The film’s title points to that pressure, rather than offering a simple judgment about the character.
Why did Damouni describe making the film as healing and cathartic?
In a 2021 PerthNow interview, Damouni said the story grew from her decade-long experience with an eating disorder and recovery. She described writing, performing in, and directing the film as “almost healing” and cathartic. The description is about her creative experience of shaping a personal story; it does not establish a clinical benefit or suggest that making a film cures an eating disorder.

Damouni also connected the project to the isolation she experienced during recovery. In a FilmShortage interview, she said quarantine and the online “fitness challenges” circulating during lockdown reminded her of the illness’s isolating nature. She hoped the film would broaden viewers’ understanding, saying, “We never know what people may be hiding behind closed doors.” That is her intended message, not a measured claim about the film’s impact.
How was Be Good made during lockdown?
Damouni and her partner, Montgomery Mauro, made the film in Los Angeles during the 2020 U.S. lockdown. They began with a practical question: could they make a short film in one room with a crew of two? In the FilmShortage interview, Damouni described that limitation as a creative challenge that became meaningful to the project.

She said they chose practical lighting, props, and art direction to support the visual story and Leila’s mindset. Among the details she singled out were a table lamp, a fish bowl, and post-it notes. These are Damouni’s accounts of the production, rather than observations from an independent on-set report.
Why did Damouni want to tell this story through an Arab woman’s perspective?
Damouni said she wanted to explore eating disorders, body image, and diet-culture pressures through the lens of an Arab woman. She described seeing limited and often stereotyped representation while growing up, and said she wanted more nuanced portrayals. In PerthNow, she also spoke about how rarely these subjects were discussed in relation to women of colour. Those comments explain her artistic motivation; they should not be read as a quantified account of representation across the film industry.

Her message to viewers who recognize themselves in the story was direct: “I want anyone who recognises themselves in the film to know they are not alone and help is available.” The film expresses that hope through Leila’s experience; it is not a substitute for professional support.
