Jerry Springer’s own “best worst” selections ranged from a news-focused first season to food fights, a horse-themed episode and a stage production at Carnegie Hall. The ten moments were presented in anniversary-era retrospectives as Springer’s nominations—not as an objective ranking of every notorious segment from a show that ran for more than 4,000 episodes, according to PerthNow’s 2023 account.

Springer’s choices offer a revealing mix: some entries became shorthand for the show’s tabloid reputation, while others point to its earlier format or its life beyond television. PerthNow published the ten as moments Springer nominated for TV Week’s 25th-anniversary retrospective; TV Insider’s April 2023 article likewise described a list supplied by Springer and his team for a TV Guide Magazine reflection tied to the show’s 25th season, based on an interview from 2015. Their labels and framing differ in places, so the list below follows PerthNow’s ten selections and notes useful differences.

PerthNow’s retrospective and TV Insider’s account provide the details and attributed remarks below.

The 10 moments Springer nominated

1. The show’s newsier debut season (1991)

The first season was a different kind of program from the confrontational tabloid show many viewers came to associate with Springer. Its subjects included terrorism, smoking on planes and poverty. Including the debut season in a “wildest” list broadens the idea of a memorable moment: it marks the show’s starting point before its later format took hold.

2. “I Married a Horse” (1998)

A guest described a horse named Pixel as his wife. Springer recalled that the episode was timed around the Kentucky Derby to draw horse enthusiasts: “We wanted horse lovers to watch.” He also said he spoke against the relationship in his “Final Thought.” The episode’s premise was provocative, but Springer’s explanation of its timing was pointedly practical.

3. “Talk to the hand”

Springer credited his show with helping popularize the dismissive phrase “talk to the hand.” That is a claim about its reach, not settled proof that the program originated it: PerthNow notes that the sitcom Martin also claims the first reference. TV Insider framed the selection as Springer having America “talking to the hand.”

4. Food fights

Food brought onstage could become ammunition when tempers rose. Springer recalled moving away from the action to protect his suits and described food as a “dangerous weapon” in an angry guest’s hands. The recurring spectacle became one of the show’s recognizable forms of on-air chaos.

5. The 1997 supremacist-related brawl

The episode appears under different labels in the two retrospectives: PerthNow calls it “Klanfrontration,” while TV Insider uses “Black Supremacists vs. White Supremacists.” PerthNow reports that a fight involving Jewish Defense League and Ku Klux Klan members spread to security and audience members. Springer described it as “a serious show” that ended in a brawl. The episode is memorable for the escalation, not a reason to sensationalize the hate-group participants.

6. Spam-Man (2001)

TV Insider identifies Spam-Man as a canned-food fetishist and notes that the program later featured other food-themed guests. PerthNow describes David and his girlfriend, Alotta, smearing canned food while in an inflatable pool. It was an especially literal collision of the show’s appetite for unusual confessions and messy spectacle.

7. Springer Break (2002)

A week of shows was taped at Jamaica’s Hedonism Club. Springer later joked: “After a week with us, even the hedonistic swingers were put off.” The line turns the setting into the punchline, making this selection as much about Springer’s retrospective humor as the location.

8. “I Cut Off My Manhood” (1997)

In this brief, disturbing segment, guest Earl Zea described injuring himself with garden shears. The accounts quote Springer responding with bemusement about changing a phone number. That is the guest’s televised account; these retrospectives do not independently establish his medical history, and the episode needs no graphic embellishment to explain why Springer selected it.

9. “Three Pigs and a Trailer” (2001; sequel in 2007)

TV Insider describes episodes featuring three men eating junk food. Springer’s quip supplied the title’s comic frame: “If The Biggest Loser had a prequel, this is it.” A sequel followed in 2007, extending the segment beyond its original appearance.

10. Harvey Keitel in Jerry Springer: The Opera at Carnegie Hall (2008)

The final selection is not a talk-show episode. Springer chose a moment from the show’s cultural afterlife: Harvey Keitel appeared in Jerry Springer: The Opera at Carnegie Hall. Springer reflected on the opportunities his recognition brought him, making the list’s ending a turn from outrageous television to the unexpected reach of the name and persona.

Why other “wildest moments” lists differ

Springer’s ten are a personally nominated anniversary selection, not a definitive countdown of the show’s most shocking clips. The lists published by PerthNow and TV Insider broadly overlap, but they use different labels for the 1997 supremacist-related episode and vary in how they describe or frame entries. PerthNow also adds other notorious moments of its own—including a man appearing in a box, a guest’s account of amputating her legs, and a mother-daughter dominatrix duo—after Springer’s ten. Those additions belong to the publication’s retrospective, not his nominated set.

The distinction matters because the list is not simply a compilation of the most extreme confrontations. It includes the show’s newsier beginnings, recurring bits such as food fights, and an opera production that carried its identity onto a major stage. Springer’s own comments often treat the spectacle with self-deprecating humor, but the selections also show how wide the program’s definition of a “moment” could be.
