Jerry Seinfeld credited Rob Reiner with helping Seinfeld survive early doubts at NBC—not with creating the sitcom. PBS says Seinfeld and Larry David developed the concept in 1989; Reiner’s reported role came later, when he argued that the show deserved time to find its stories.
Who created Seinfeld—and what did Reiner do?
The distinction is important: Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David developed the sitcom concept, drawing on Seinfeld’s life as a New York stand-up comedian, according to PBS. Reiner’s contribution, as later described in a report about Seinfeld’s tribute, was advocacy for the series when NBC questioned its story structure.

In that report, TalkCeleb attributes to Seinfeld’s Instagram post the statement that, after David and George Shapiro, Reiner had “the biggest influence” on his career, followed by: “Our show would have never happened without him.” Those words express Seinfeld’s gratitude for Reiner’s support; they do not replace Seinfeld and David’s credit for developing the show.
Why did NBC reportedly doubt the show?
According to TalkCeleb’s account of Reiner’s 2016 interview with Howard Stern, the network’s concern was that the early episodes were “just people sitting around talking.” Reiner reportedly said the issue was not whether Seinfeld and David were funny, but whether the episodes had enough story to satisfy NBC.

Reiner recalled appealing to NBC executive Brandon Tartikoff to keep the series on air. TalkCeleb quotes him saying, “I begged him,” and recounting a promise that stories would come and the show would become one of the network’s great shows. In this telling, Reiner’s case was for patience: the show’s conversational premise could still yield stories.

The story is best understood as a reported example of Reiner’s early advocacy, not as evidence that he originated Seinfeld or single-handedly secured its future. PBS supports the Seinfeld-and-David development history. The Reiner anecdotes and the wording of Seinfeld’s tribute here come through TalkCeleb, which attributes them to an Instagram post and a 2016 Howard Stern interview; those original recordings or posts were not independently reviewed for this account.

A 1995 Los Angeles Times production feature provides contemporary context on the show’s production and creative process and identifies Castle Rock as its producer. It complements the later recollection, but does not independently verify the reported exchange with Tartikoff.
