Jerry Miller, the guitarist and songwriter who co-founded Moby Grape, died in Tacoma, Washington, in July 2024 at age 81. The Washington Post reported that he died July 21; some contemporary reports gave July 20. His family did not disclose a cause of death.
From Tacoma to the Northwest music scene
Miller was born in Tacoma on July 10, 1943, and began playing guitar as a child. Before moving to the Bay Area, he performed in dance-rock bands around the Pacific Northwest. That regional circuit also brought him into contact with Jimi Hendrix, according to the Washington Post obituary.

Miller later recalled that the Byrds helped him imagine a different kind of guitar band. In a 2007 interview with writer and musician Frank Goodman, he said, “The Byrds were the first band that I heard that made me say, ‘Hey, I could play with other guitar players,’”
Co-founding Moby Grape
In 1966, Miller co-founded Moby Grape, joining Peter Lewis and Alexander “Skip” Spence as the band’s three guitarists. Miller brought a blues background to the group’s layered guitar sound. The Washington Post reported that he met Jerry Garcia during the Frantics’ move toward California, another link between the Northwest scene and San Francisco’s burgeoning rock community.

Moby Grape’s self-titled debut arrived in 1967. Miller and drummer Don Stevenson co-wrote “Hey Grandma” and “8:05,” both on the album. Miller also co-wrote “Murder in My Heart for the Judge,” later covered by Three Dog Night. Recalling the debut sessions, he told the Washington Post: “It was all just a lot of fun, but hard work, too. A lot of stress going in there, hoping you could pull it off just right, come up with something imaginative and new. And we did.”
The record drew strong attention, but the band’s story soon became more difficult. Management problems and internal tensions complicated Moby Grape’s early prospects. Miller later described the gap between promise and outcome to the Seattle Times in 2021: “We could have had it all,” he said, “but we ended up with pretty well nothing.”

A career beyond the band’s first run
Miller continued performing in other bands and as a solo musician after Moby Grape’s initial period. His reputation as a guitarist also received broader recognition: the Washington Post reported that Rolling Stone ranked him No. 68 on its 2010 list of the 100 greatest guitarists. The same obituary reported that the magazine’s 2003 original list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time placed Moby Grape’s debut at No. 121.
Miller remembered the band’s first jam session with characteristic simplicity: “We laughed all the way home,” he said, as reported by the Washington Post. That recollection sits alongside the more complicated history of a group whose early promise was not matched by an uncomplicated career.
