Goodbye?, a feature-length documentary about Jèrriais and the people working to keep Jersey’s native language alive, is listed for five parish-hall screenings between 6 and 20 October 2026. The film premiered at Jersey Arts Centre on 23 May, where the Parish of St Mary reports a sold-out audience, a standing ovation and the 13th Parish Film Festival Audience Award. Check each event listing for current details and availability.
What is À Bétôt? Goodbye? about?
The documentary offers an intimate portrait of Jèrriais, following native speakers and the movement working to support the language’s future. The 13th Parish Film Festival describes it as a call to action for new learners, speakers and enthusiasts. BBC reporting identifies Ben Spink, head of the Jèrriais Teaching Service, as the film’s producer; the Guernsey Film Fest programme names Annigna Kennedy and Tom Kennedy as directors.
Spink told the BBC that capturing the stories and voices of older native speakers mattered because “They’re coming towards the end of their lives, which is a really sad moment for Jersey.” He also pointed to the cultural stakes: “A lot of our folklore is written only in Jèrriais.” Without people who understand and speak the language, he said, “we lose the sense of what those things mean and we lose part of our island’s story.”
