Jeri Taylor helped shape Star Trek: Voyager as a co-creator and its writers’ room leader for the first four seasons. The phrase “mother of Voyager” honors that creative stewardship and her influence on Captain Kathryn Janeway; it is a tribute, not a claim that Taylor created the series or character alone. StarTrek.com reported that Taylor died on October 23, 2024, at 86. The Television Academy lists October 24, leaving a one-day discrepancy between the published accounts.
Who was Jeri Taylor?
Jeri Taylor was an American television writer and producer whose career spanned acclaimed dramas and the Star Trek franchise. Before joining Star Trek: The Next Generation, she worked on series including Quincy, M.E., Magnum, P.I., In the Heat of the Night and Jake and the Fatman. StarTrek.com’s 2024 memorial says she wrote more than 30 episodes across the franchise.
Her work on The Next Generation established her as a key creative voice in the franchise before she helped launch Voyager.
What did Jeri Taylor do on Star Trek?
Her work on The Next Generation
Taylor joined The Next Generation during its fourth season. She became a co-executive producer in season six, then served as executive producer and showrunner in the series’ final season. Among her best-known contributions was “The Drumhead,” a story about suspicion, due process and the danger of allowing fear to erode individual rights. StarTrek.com’s memorial reports that Taylor considered it the script she was most proud of.

Co-creating and guiding Voyager
Discussions about Voyager began in August 1993, and the series premiered with the two-hour episode “Caretaker” on January 16, 1995. Rick Berman recalled asking Taylor to join him and Michael Piller in creating the show. “This was a show that I asked Jeri Taylor to join Michael and me in creating,” he told StarTrek.com.
Taylor co-created Voyager with Berman and Piller and led its writers’ room for the first four seasons. That combination of a shared creation credit and sustained leadership explains why her influence on the series was so substantial without making her its sole creator.

Why is Jeri Taylor called the “mother of Voyager”?
“Mother of Voyager” is an affectionate description of Taylor’s role in shaping the series, particularly its stories and central captain. It reflects her close creative stewardship, not a formal credit and not sole authorship. Berman and Piller were her co-creators, and the show’s development was a collaborative effort.
The phrase also connects to Taylor’s influence on Kathryn Janeway, played by Kate Mulgrew. In StarTrek.com’s memorial, Mulgrew said Taylor wanted Janeway to be a significant part of her legacy and credited Taylor with changing her life. Her tribute underscores the lasting importance of Taylor’s work on the character.

Taylor helped shape Janeway through her work on Voyager and later wrote fiction that explored the captain’s history. Her novel Mosaic focuses on Janeway; the Television Academy describes it as a backstory for the character. Taylor also wrote the Voyager novel Pathways. Simon & Schuster’s publisher page for Mosaic identifies Taylor as its author and presents it as a Janeway-focused book.
