That establishes a substantial career interruption, but not a dollar loss: the reporting available here does not quantify lost income, medical bills, insurance payments, or any change in his finances.
What happened in Renner’s accident?
On New Year’s Day 2023, Renner was run over by his own seven-ton Pistenbully snow groomer while trying to free a relative’s vehicle on a private road near Lake Tahoe, Nevada. The Associated Press reported that he suffered major chest trauma and other serious injuries. Authorities said there were no signs of impairment or foul play. How extensive were his injuries?
In January 2023, Renner said he had broken more than 30 bones. CBS News described the total as 38 in May 2024. Those accounts are dated reports, not a contradiction that can be resolved by treating one number as an exact final count. CBS News
A 2025 Guardian interview, describing injuries Renner documented, lists multiple rib and pelvic fractures, fractures in both ankles, a broken tibia and wrist, facial fractures, a collapsed lung, and a pierced liver. How long was he away from work?
CBS News reported in May 2024 that Renner had been unable to work for over a year before returning to Mayor of Kingstown. He described acting as helpful to his ability to cope, while recalling that the early stages of recovery were fragile and touch-and-go. His return marks a return to work; it does not show that his physical recovery was complete.

- January 2023: After returning home from hospital, he referred to “brain fog in recovery” in a post reported by the Associated Press.
- January 2024: Renner told The Guardian, “There was a lot for me to fight for, and recovery was just a one-way road in my mind.” The Guardian

- July 2025: The Guardian reported that he had spent the prior year focused on walking and was still working to walk and breathe normally and trust his body.
Did the recovery cost him a fortune?
The sources establish time away from work, not its financial consequences. None provides a verified estimate of Renner’s lost salary, medical expenses, insurance coverage, reduced future work, or net financial impact. Being unable to work for more than a year may have affected his earnings, but the amount—and whether other costs or payments offset any lost income—is not established by these reports.
For that reason, there is no substantiated dollar figure supporting the claim that the accident cost Renner a fortune. Celebrity net-worth estimates or assumptions about what an actor earns cannot fill that gap; they do not document what he earned, lost, paid, or received in connection with this accident.
