What was reportedly found in Harris’s bag?
Okinawa Regional Customs spokesperson Tatsunori Fukuda told The Associated Press that customs officers found 0.78 grams (0.0275 ounces) of crystal containing MDMA in a container in Harris’s tote bag. The reported quantity and substance are details attributed to customs; they do not establish who owned the item or amount to a court finding. The Associated Press reported the arrest details.
Why was he arrested in Japan?
Harris was arrested on suspicion of a customs-law violation after arriving at Naha Airport, according to AP. He had departed London Heathrow two days earlier and transited through Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport before traveling to Okinawa for sightseeing. AP reported that officials believed the substance was for personal use and said no other drugs were found in his luggage; these were reported officials’ positions, not findings established at trial.
Was Jeremy O. Harris released?
Yes. The Tomishiro police department confirmed to AP that Harris was released from police custody on Dec. 8, 2025. Police did not say whether he was released on bail or had left Japan. AP reported his release and the unresolved case status on Dec. 10.

Was he charged, convicted, or cleared?
The cited AP reports do not establish that Harris was formally charged, convicted, or cleared. AP said police sent the case to the Naha District Public Prosecutors’ Office for further investigation and possible indictment. In its Dec. 10 report, AP said prosecutors would not confirm whether the matter had been dropped or was still being investigated. The status described in that report is unresolved; release from custody by itself does not answer whether a case remains open.
What has Harris said about the incident?
In a later conversation with Whoopi Goldberg, Harris said the substance was not his, said he asked for a drug test and tested negative, and described being detained for 22 days. Marie Claire UK reported his remarks, including: “These are not my drugs. This is an accident from a wedding. Drug test me.” Those statements are Harris’s account, not independently verified investigative findings. Marie Claire UK reported his account.
