Jeopardy! is a quiz show built around a reversal: contestants are given clues phrased as answers and must respond in question form. The original NBC program began in 1964; the current syndicated version debuted in 1984. Season 43 returned to syndication on September 14, 2026, with next-day streaming announced for services in the United States and Canada.
How does Jeopardy! work?
Three contestants compete across three rounds: Jeopardy!, Double Jeopardy!, and Final Jeopardy!. The rules below are described in the official Season 42 press kit, so they are attributed to that season’s materials rather than presented as a separate, current rulebook.
The Jeopardy! Round
The board has six categories, each with five clues. Contestants select clues, which are phrased as answers, and ring in to respond in question form. There is one Daily Double. Only the contestant who uncovers it may answer, and that player must wager before the clue is read; the press kit specifies a minimum wager of $5.
Double Jeopardy!
A new set of categories appears, clue values double, and there are two Daily Doubles. Wagers can make this round pivotal: a correct response can substantially increase a player’s score, while a wrong response costs the wager.

Final Jeopardy!
The category is revealed before a commercial break, giving each contestant time to decide on a wager from zero up to their accumulated cash winnings. After the clue appears, contestants have 30 seconds to write a response in question form. The player with the highest total wins that day and, according to the Season 42 press kit, returns as defending champion with no stated appearance limit while they continue winning.
Why buzzer timing matters
Knowing an answer is not enough; a contestant also has to ring in at the right time. In a 2017 J!Buzz explainer, the show says the signaling devices activate only after the host finishes reading the clue. Once the system is armed, it registers the first signal and ignores later ones; an early attempt causes a quarter-second lockout. That timing rule helps explain why contestants sometimes appear to hesitate even when they know the response.

When did Jeopardy! begin?
The show’s official history traces its first episode to NBC on March 30, 1964. Created by Merv Griffin and hosted by Art Fleming, the daytime program ran until 1975. The current syndicated edition debuted in 1984. The distinction matters: the show’s original NBC run and the familiar syndicated version are different chapters of its history. Jeopardy!’s official history and JeoparDAY! page marks the program’s 62nd birthday in 2026.

What is current for Season 43?
Jeopardy! returned to syndication for Season 43 on September 14, 2026, according to the show’s official media center. In its announcement, the company described Season 42 as the #1 syndicated series and #1 entertainment series during that season; this is the company’s own ranking claim, not an independently established audience measurement. The Season 42 press kit identified Ken Jennings as host, Michael Davies as executive producer, Johnny Gilbert as announcer, and Sony Pictures Television as producer; those credits are specific to that season’s materials.

Can you play Jeopardy! at home?
Yes. The show’s Games & More page lists an interactive Jeopardy! experience for Infinity Game Tables and Infinity Game Boards, and links to Arcade1Up. That establishes the show’s association with those products, but not a specific retailer listing, price, stock status, or compatibility with every hardware revision. Check the maker’s current product details before buying.
PlayShow is a separate digital option
Jeopardy! PlayShow is a digital game rather than a physical board. The official page describes play using PlayStation, Xbox, select platforms, and a mobile device; players speak their answers and can play with friends. It also says the game offers more than 35 years of downloadable historical episodes. Check the page for current supported platforms and availability.
