In a September 2024 interview report from Entertainment Weekly republished by AOL, Lopez described Judy’s difficult relationships and the mutual support at the heart of the story.
Why Jennifer Lopez cried while discussing Unstoppable
The emotional moment followed the film’s world-premiere screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. Lopez recalled a final embrace between Judy and Anthony, inspired by a photograph from Anthony’s last college wrestling match. She said she asked director William Goldenberg to include the moment in the film.
Lopez recounted that Judy told her son, “You did it!” Anthony replied, “We did it!” The report says Lopez and Judy became emotional after the screening, where Judy introduced Anthony to the audience at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall. The AOL report of Entertainment Weekly’s interview describes the scene and the premiere.
What Lopez said about Judy’s difficult relationships
Lopez described Judy as a young mother trying to find her way while raising five children. According to the interview report, Judy had her first child at 16, and Lopez said she and Anthony “kind of grew up together.”

The mother-son story behind the film
Unstoppable is based on Anthony Robles’s story as a wrestler, with Lopez playing his mother. Lopez also spoke about the way their support for one another shaped Judy’s life. She said Judy earned a PhD, inspired in part by Anthony’s example and the support she had given him.
“To see what her story is at the end of the movie, that she has a PhD, but her son inspired her to do that because she supported her son, it’s a beautiful kind of exchange of love and selflessness that they both had,” Lopez said.
