Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin showed support for Kamala Harris after a speaker at Donald Trump’s October 27, 2024, Madison Square Garden rally disparaged Puerto Rico. Both artists shared a Harris campaign video about the island; Martin added “I remember” and also shared the speaker’s clip. Four days later, Lopez appeared at a Harris campaign event in North Las Vegas and explicitly said she would vote for Harris.
What Lopez and Martin shared on October 27
At Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally in New York on October 27, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made a disparaging remark about Puerto Rico, calling it “a floating island of garbage,” as BET reported. BET’s account of the posts and remark describes the social-media response that followed.
Lopez and Martin each shared a Harris campaign video about Puerto Rico. BET reported that the video included Harris saying: “I will never forget what Donald Trump did and what he did not do when Puerto Rico needed a caring and a competent leader.” That was Harris’s wording in the campaign video—not a quote from either artist.
Martin’s response was distinct: he added the caption “I remember” to the video in his Instagram Story and also shared Hinchcliffe’s clip, according to BET. The coverage documents the artists sharing campaign content and expressing support; it does not establish that either post made them formal members of the Harris campaign.

Why Puerto Rico was central to the response
Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, and Lopez, Martin, and fellow artist Bad Bunny have ties to it. Axios reported that all three shared support for Harris after Hinchcliffe’s remark. Axios’s coverage of the reaction placed the posts in the context of the rally comment.
The timing and contemporaneous coverage connect the posts to the remark, but the available reporting does not establish that it was the artists’ only reason for supporting Harris. Nor does it show that the posts changed voter behavior or affected the election outcome.

Lopez’s October 31 speech at a Harris event
Lopez moved from sharing campaign material online to speaking in person at a Harris campaign event in North Las Vegas on October 31. Maná also appeared, and Harris acknowledged both the band and Lopez. The event transcript is preserved by the American Presidency Project; CNN’s transcript of Lopez’s remarks records her comments.
Lopez criticized the Madison Square Garden remarks, saying, “It wasn’t just Puerto Ricans that were offended that day, OK? It was every Latino in this country. It was humanity and anyone of decent character.” She also identified herself as Puerto Rican and said she would cast her ballot for Harris. This rally speech is the clearest direct evidence of Lopez’s personal endorsement in the reported events.
The distinction matters: both artists shared Harris campaign content after the rally remark, while the cited coverage records Lopez—not Martin—speaking at the October 31 event and explicitly pledging her vote. It does not report a corresponding rally appearance by Martin.
