That personal framing sits alongside a deliberately varied pop record. Apple Music links the swagger of “like JENNIE,” “ExtraL,” and “Damn Right” with more inward-looking songs such as “F.T.S.,” “twin,” and “start a war,” which touch on fame, protecting loved ones, and defining oneself. The contrast gives the album room to shift between self-assured performance and vulnerability.
The phrase “fast-moving good time” appears on JENNIE’s official Ruby page as an excerpt attributed to Rolling Stone. The page describes the solo debut as steeped in R&B-leaning pop associated with the 2000s and 2010s. That characterization captures its pop-forward momentum, but it is a critical impression rather than a measurable quality.

How do the songs and styles vary?
JENNIE’s collaborators include Childish Gambino, Doechii, Dominic Fike, Dua Lipa, FKJ, and Kali Uchis. Their presence gives the project several points of contrast, while the album’s arrangements range from familiar pop beats to rap and acoustic balladry.
Associated Press critic Maria Sherman points to “Twin” as acoustic balladry, “Zen” as rap, and “With the IE (Way Up)” and “Start A War” as songs built around familiar pop beats. Sherman found the songs strong and diverse, while questioning whether the album is wholly distinctive. Her assessment is one critic’s reading, not a consensus verdict. What did critics praise and question?
Pitchfork reviewer Joshua Minsoo Kim praised the production and songwriting as more ambitious and accomplished than he found on other BLACKPINK members’ solo releases. He also criticized “Twin” and “Seoul City.” Those reservations sit alongside his praise for the album’s craft; they are his judgments about specific songs, not evidence that listeners will respond to them the same way. Taken together, the reviews offer a useful way to approach Ruby: its variety is a source of energy, but variety alone does not guarantee a singular identity. The key question is whether the changes in tone feel like different sides of JENNIE or leave the album less cohesive. AP emphasizes the breadth while raising the distinctiveness question; Pitchfork focuses more on ambition and production while naming two tracks it finds less successful.
