2015–2016: Dating begins, though accounts differ
The exact start of their relationship is not consistently reported. Us Weekly places the beginning in 2015 and reports that they briefly split in 2016 before getting back together. The Knot’s timeline instead dates their relationship to 2016 and notes speculation about them as a couple that February. These accounts support a broad 2015–2016 window, not a definitive private start date.
June 2018: An engagement in Venice
Chmerkovskiy proposed during a trip to Venice, Italy. Johnson announced their engagement on June 14, 2018. In the Instagram message reproduced by ABC News, she wrote: “I knew the moment I met you, you were the man of my dreams and I wanted to be with you forever.”
