Jencarlos Canela plays Victor, the uncle who takes in teenage prodigy Ashley García when she moves across the country for a NASA opportunity. Victor’s comic first impression is that he is irresponsible, but Canela describes him as a loving uncle trying to become a good role model—and says the two characters help each other grow.
Who does Jencarlos Canela play?
Canela portrays Victor, Ashley’s uncle. Netflix introduced him in its 2019 series announcement as a former professional football player turned high-school coach; Apple TV also identifies Canela’s character as Uncle Victor. Netflix’s announcement and Apple TV’s listing confirm the role.
Ashley is described by Netflix as a 15-and-a-half-year-old robotics engineer and rocket scientist who relocates to pursue a NASA opportunity. Living with Victor brings the high-achieving teenager into close contact with an uncle whose approach to life is much less orderly.
What is Victor like?
Canela told TV Insider that Victor can initially seem irresponsible, while stressing how much he loves Ashley and wants to be a strong role model for her. That contrast gives the character more to do than provide comic chaos: Victor is trying to show up for his niece even as he works out what being dependable looks like.

How do Victor and Ashley influence each other?
Their relationship is reciprocal rather than a one-way lesson in responsibility. Canela explained: “Ashley teaches him responsibility and stability, and he teaches her how to be a kid and not just a genius.” Ashley’s focus and maturity challenge Victor to become steadier; his encouragement, in turn, makes room for her to experience adolescence beyond her gifts and ambitions.
That exchange is the emotional center of the family comedy. Victor is not simply the adult correcting Ashley, nor is Ashley merely the prodigy who fixes him. Each has something the other needs, and the humor comes from that mismatch as much as from their affection.

Why do the show’s titles differ?
The project was announced by Netflix in May 2019 as The Expanding Universe of Ashley García. Netflix’s current catalog page presents it as Ashley Garcia: Genius in Love, while identifying The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia as the Part 1 trailer title. These are different labels associated with the same program, not evidence of a separate production. Catalog titles and viewing access may vary by territory.
