A drawing in Jeffrey Epstein’s 2003 birthday book pairs a scene labeled “1983,” in which a man gives balloons to three girls, with a “2003” panel showing the man receiving massages from topless women. The published accounts describe what the illustration shows, but do not identify its artist or establish that it records real events.
What the drawing depicts
The Washington Post describes the first panel as “a drawing, labeled ‘1983,’ of a man giving balloons to three girls in skirts and pigtails.” Beside it, a panel labeled “2003” shows the man receiving massages from topless blond women. The Washington Post’s account says the illustration also includes a private jet and the caption “What a great country!”
The Guardian’s description adds that the man in the first panel hands the girls a lollipop. It likewise describes the later panel as showing Epstein receiving a massage from topless women. The Guardian’s report attributes these details to the artwork; they are not independent confirmation that the depicted events happened.
Where it appears in the birthday book
The drawing is part of a scrapbook made for Epstein’s 50th birthday in 2003. In a July 25, 2025 letter, House Oversight Democrats said the Epstein estate possessed the document, commonly called the “birthday book,” and identified Ghislaine Maxwell as its compiler. The letter requested an unredacted copy for congressional oversight. Read the House Oversight Democrats’ letter.
#1 Best Overall
The Guardian reported that House committee Democrats released scanned pages from the 238-page scrapbook in September 2025. The Washington Post describes the released item as a three-volume, leather-bound book. Maxwell’s introduction, quoted by the Post, says: “The idea behind the book was simply to gather stories and old photographs to jog your memory about places and people and different events.”
What the drawing does not establish
The reviewed coverage does not name the contributor who made this particular drawing or provide details authenticating its creation. The panels juxtapose scenes labeled 1983 and 2003, but the reports do not establish that the girls in the first image are the same people, or that the illustration documents actual events. It should be described as a depiction, not proof of grooming, abuse, or a specific crime.
