Jeff Probst called Liz Wilcox’s reaction to being left out of a Survivor 46 Applebee’s reward “obviously upsetting,” describing it as “real emotion and absolute vulnerability.” He urged viewers to imagine themselves in Liz’s position rather than turn the scene into a punchline.
Why Liz reacted to the Applebee’s reward
In the May 1, 2024 episode, Q Burdette won a food reward and chose Tiffany Nicole Ervin, Maria Shrime Gonzalez, and Kenzie Petty to join him for a meal at Applebee’s. Liz had asked to be picked. When Q left her out, she cried, then yelled about his choice and other tensions in the game. Q apologized and said he had made his decision based on where his head was.

The reward carried more meaning for Liz than a restaurant meal alone. Contemporary reports said she was allergic to coconut and other fruit and had eaten less than the other contestants. They also described a weekly routine in which she picked up her daughter, went to Applebee’s, and then watched Survivor together before having a sleepover. Those details offer context for the moment, but do not establish a clinical explanation for her reaction.
What Jeff Probst said about Liz’s reaction
Probst discussed the scene on his On Fire with Jeff Probst podcast. In the May 2024 reporting, he said: “My reaction on the day was very similar to the reaction I had just now hearing it again on this podcast. It’s obviously upsetting. That’s real emotion and absolute vulnerability.”

He also asked viewers to consider how they might respond under similar pressure: “This is the kind of moment on Survivor when a lot of people will make fun, and there will be memes. But imagine that’s you, and for whatever reason you’ve been triggered in the same way. I mean, that is proof that you forget about the cameras because there’s no facade going on there.”
Probst framed the outburst as part of the strain of competing, while emphasizing his empathy for Liz: “I have a lot of empathy for Liz, but it is also part of the adventure that comes with playing this game because it is designed to push you, and sometimes it does push you so far out of your comfort zone that you break down in some way.” His comments are his interpretation of the scene, not a diagnosis of Liz.

Probst’s comments on the Applebee’s partnership
Probst also addressed whether the castaways’ excitement about the reward was prompted. Reality TV World quoted him saying: “So when I’m out there and I say ‘Applebee’s’ to the players, I just want you to know those are not prompted reactions. We’re not holding up big cards saying, ‘Applause, Applebee’s!’ That’s legitimate.” He called Applebee’s “one of the very best partnerships we’ve ever had on the show.”
Inside Survivor separately reported that Probst described the deal as “It’s a win for Applebee’s, it’s a win for Survivor, and it’s a win for the players.” The same outlet reported his account that an Applebee’s chef was flown to Fiji with supplies to prepare the reward feast; that logistical detail is Probst’s account as reported by the outlet.
