Jeff Lang’s mother, Susan Lang, believes Taylor Swift’s song “Ruin the Friendship” refers to her late son. In a report republished by Yahoo from People and attributed to an interview with The Tennessean, she said she was amazed Swift had not forgotten him and that “She’s keeping his name alive.” That is Susan Lang’s interpretation; the report does not establish that Swift has confirmed Jeff as the song’s subject.
What did Jeff Lang’s mother say?
Susan Lang recalled that Jeff and Swift were close friends who spent time together. The report attributes these words to her: “They were really good friends,” and “That’s rare these days. They hung out at her house a lot. They were always joking around with each other.”
Reacting to the song, Lang said she was struck that Swift had not forgotten her son: “That after all this time, she hasn’t forgotten about him.” She added, “She’s keeping his name alive.” These comments are reported from the interview; the accessible account is a Yahoo republication of People that identifies The Tennessean as the interview source.

Is “Ruin the Friendship” confirmed to be about Jeff Lang?
No public confirmation from Swift is established in the available reporting. The clearest attribution is Susan Lang’s belief that the song refers to Jeff. Keep that distinct from the documented history between the two and from listeners’ interpretations of the lyrics.

This is a public historical connection between Swift and Lang, and it documents her mention of him after describing her friend’s funeral. It does not, on its own, establish the intended subject of a song released years later. BMI’s November 10, 2010 account.
What do Gallatin Road and Hendersonville have to do with the song?
The Associated Press’s October 4, 2025 album guide says a reference to Gallatin Road likely points to Hendersonville, Tennessee, where Swift spent part of her adolescence. That is a geographic interpretation, not explicit confirmation by Swift that the song is about Lang or that every lyric is biographical.
