A 1994 report said a North Carolina appeals court upheld a $487,000 award to Jackson (Rock) Pinckney over an injury during the filming of Cyborg. That is the reported award—not proof that Jean-Claude Van Damme personally paid that amount or that Pinckney collected it in full.
What was the case about?
In a report published January 15, 1993, the Los Angeles Times, republishing an Associated Press account, said Jason (Rock) Pinckney filed suit in July 1991. He claimed Van Damme struck him in the left eye with a sword during a fight scene for Cyborg, and alleged permanent loss of eyesight. The suit sought more than $10,000. The report said Superior Court Judge George Fountain denied Van Damme’s effort to dismiss the case, leaving the question for a jury. Read the Associated Press report published by the Los Angeles Times.
A later Deseret News report said the incident occurred during filming in 1988. It described Pinckney as a Fort Bragg soldier hired to play a villain, said he was partially blinded after being struck with a rubber knife, and reported that his injury led to a medical discharge from the Army. Its description of the prop differs from the 1993 report’s reference to a sword; the accounts should not be treated as identical descriptions. Read the Deseret News report.
Why are there two different dollar figures?
The more-than-$10,000 figure was the amount the 1993 account said Pinckney sought in his suit at that stage. The $487,000 figure came later: Deseret News reported on September 8, 1994, that a Raleigh appeals court upheld an award in that amount. The figures refer to different stages of the case, so the original demand should not be confused with the reported appellate award.

Does the $487,000 mean Van Damme paid that amount?
No. The reporting establishes that Deseret News said the award was upheld on appeal. The available accounts do not establish how much Van Damme personally paid, who ultimately paid the award, or whether it was collected in full. It is therefore accurate to call it a reported $487,000 award upheld by an appeals court, but not to present it as a verified payment by Van Damme.
