Was JD Souther an Eagle?
No. Souther was never an official member of the Eagles. He was an important outside collaborator whose songwriting and friendship with Glenn Frey connected him closely to the band. Souther moved from Texas to Los Angeles in the late 1960s, where he and Frey became close and briefly formed the duo Longbranch Pennywhistle.
Souther co-wrote several songs recorded by the Eagles, among them “Best of My Love,” “James Dean,” “New Kid in Town,” “Doolin-Dalton” and “Heartache Tonight.” The official Souther biography credits him, Bob Seger, Glenn Frey and Don Henley as co-writers of “Heartache Tonight.” These are songwriting credits, not evidence that Souther was a band member; the cited sources do not specify individual shares of credit.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted him in 2013. Its description, quoted in his official biography, called him “a principal architect of the Southern California sound and a major influence on a generation of songwriters.” The Eagles’ September 18, 2024, memorial likewise called him “a crucial co-writer” on several of their popular songs. Souther’s work is a reminder that a songwriter’s influence can be heard across many performers’ catalogs, not only on records released under the songwriter’s own name.
