In March 2025, Shawn Carter, known professionally as Jay-Z, sued Jane Doe and her attorneys, alleging that her sexual-assault claim against him was false and that she had admitted as much to his representatives. Doe’s attorney disputed that account at the time. In September 2026, CBS News reported that Doe filed a declaration recanting her claims against Carter and saying she had never met him. Her new lawyer said she maintained that she had been sexually assaulted but had been mistaken in identifying Carter.

What Jay-Z alleged in his lawsuit

Carter filed a separate lawsuit on March 3, 2025, against Doe and attorneys including Tony Buzbee and David Fortney. According to ABC News’ report and Carter’s complaint, he asserted claims including defamation and malicious prosecution. His complaint alleged that Doe’s accusations were false, that she had demanded payment, and that she told his representatives she had made up the story. Those are allegations in a party’s pleading, not findings by a court. ABC News reported on the filing and Buzbee’s response; the complaint itself sets out Carter’s claims.

Buzbee disputed the alleged admission and said Doe stood by her claims. In a later ABC News report, an audio excerpt was described as capturing Doe agreeing that Carter did not participate in sexual acts and saying Buzbee pushed her toward suing him. Buzbee called that characterization a lie, while Doe was reported as maintaining her claims and saying she feared intimidation. These competing accounts should not be treated as a court’s resolution of what happened. ABC News covered the audio excerpt and responses.

How the original case ended

The underlying civil case began in October 2024 against Sean Combs. An amended complaint filed in December added Carter and alleged that he and Combs assaulted Doe when she was 13, after a 2000 MTV Video Music Awards after-party. These were allegations, not a verdict or established findings.

In February 2025, Doe voluntarily dismissed that case with prejudice. The Associated Press reported that the dismissal filing did not explain why she withdrew it. A dismissal with prejudice generally prevents the same claim from being brought again, but it is not itself a trial verdict deciding whether the allegations were true. The Associated Press reported on the dismissal.

What Doe said in 2026

On September 25, 2026, CBS News reported that Doe had filed a 12-page declaration recanting her claims against Carter and saying she had never met or spoken to him. CBS quoted her declaration: “There is no truth to any of my claims against Mr. Carter.” Her new lawyer, James Blair Newman Jr., said she maintained that she was a sexual-assault victim but had been entirely mistaken in identifying Carter. That distinction matters: the reported recantation concerns her claims against Carter; it is not a statement that no assault occurred at all. CBS News reported on the declaration and her lawyer’s explanation.

Where Carter’s separate case stood in the latest report

CBS News reported that Carter filed notice that he was voluntarily dismissing Doe as a defendant in his malicious-prosecution suit. The report said the case against Buzbee and his firm remained ongoing at that time. That is the status reported on September 25, 2026, not confirmation of any later docket developments.

Why the procedural distinctions matter

  • Two different lawsuits: Doe’s sexual-assault case was the original action; Carter’s March 2025 lawsuit was a separate case responding to those allegations.
  • An allegation is not a finding: Carter’s claim that Doe admitted lying came from his complaint and was disputed by Buzbee at the time.
  • Dismissal is not a verdict: The underlying case ended with prejudice, but the dismissal filing did not state a reason and did not adjudicate the truth of the allegations.
  • The later recantation has a defined scope: Doe’s reported declaration rejected her allegations against Carter, while her new lawyer said she continued to believe she had been assaulted but had misidentified him.
