What Jay Leno filed for in California
In January 2024, Jay Leno petitioned the Los Angeles County Superior Court to become conservator of Mavis Leno’s estate, according to Los Angeles Times reporting. The petition’s reported purpose was to arrange a living trust and other estate plans so that Mavis would have assets managed for her care if Jay died before her. The newspaper described the petition as seeking “managed assets sufficient to provide for her care.”
This was reported as planning for the management of Mavis’s estate and future care, not simply a request about day-to-day caregiving.
What happened in the California case
In April 2024, subsequent coverage reported that the California court granted the conservatorship. Reporting at the time also said Mavis’s court-appointed attorney supported the arrangement and that Mavis agreed to it. Why New Hampshire became part of the story in 2026
The New Hampshire matter reported in August 2026 was a separate interstate recognition request, not a new California conservatorship petition. Reports said Leno sought recognition of the California conservatorship in New Hampshire in connection with a proposed sale of real estate held jointly by the couple. WMUR reported on August 25, 2026; TMZ reported on August 23, 2026.
The available reporting does not establish the property’s precise identity, a sale price, or whether a sale was completed. It also does not establish a later court decision: WMUR and TMZ said the New Hampshire court had not ruled when their reports appeared. That is a dated status, not confirmation of the docket’s status after August 2026.
