Police arrested a man at the scene. Later reports said he admitted the charges at trial and was sentenced to 16 years in prison in July 2026.
What happened in Takadanobaba?
On the morning of March 11, 2025, Sato, 22, was livestreaming outdoors in Takadanobaba, a neighborhood in Tokyo, when she was stabbed. Nippon TV reported that police received multiple emergency calls at around 10 a.m. and arrested the suspect at the scene. Sato later died in hospital, according to the Associated Press.
Contemporaneous reports described a selfie stick at the scene. This account does not reproduce footage of the attack or graphic injury details; neither is necessary to understand the case.
What did investigators report about how she was found?
In its March 12, 2025 report, Nippon TV said the suspect told police he had located Sato through her livestream. That is an account of what he reportedly told investigators, not an independently established description of every step leading to the encounter.

The incident was reported as a livestream, but the sources cited here do not firmly establish which platform carried it. Calling Sato a YouTuber or naming a platform would therefore go beyond the available reporting.
What was reported about a financial dispute?
Early coverage described a dispute involving money, but the details were attributed to the suspect, investigators, or other media accounts. Nippon TV reported that investigators said the suspect claimed he had lent Sato more than ¥2 million. The Associated Press, in its March 14 report, attributed details about the alleged financial dispute and how he found her to police accounts and other reporting.
