Janet Jackson has described becoming a mother as the most important thing she has done, saying motherhood changed her priorities and had a “beautiful impact” on her life. In a September 2024 interview with The Guardian, she also explained why she wants her son, Eissa, to have time to enjoy being a child—a contrast with her own childhood, when she worked.
What Janet Jackson said motherhood changed
A syndicated People report published by Yahoo Entertainment on September 21, 2024, recounts Jackson’s reflections from an interview with The Guardian published the same day. The report says Jackson called becoming a mother the most important thing she had done and said she would not trade motherhood for anything. She described it as having a “beautiful impact” on her life.
Jackson also said having a child changed her priorities. Her comments frame motherhood not as a minor addition to her life, but as an experience that altered what matters most to her.
Why she wants Eissa to enjoy being a child
Jackson said she wants Eissa to experience childhood because, in her view, it is a stage of life that cannot be repeated. She contrasted that with adulthood, which lasts for the rest of a person’s life, and said she wants him to enjoy each minute of being a child.

The point is personal to Jackson: she worked as a child, and she wants her son’s experience to be different. Her remarks describe the childhood she hopes he can have; they are not presented as a general parenting prescription.
What she said about family and doing things differently
The report also says Jackson reflected on how parents can make choices they later wish they had handled differently, without passing those choices on to their children. She expressed gratitude that her own parents kept her grounded. The article attributes to her the thought that she disliked it as a child but is thankful for it now, in the context of that grounding.
