Jane Goodall’s interview for Netflix’s Famous Last Words was recorded in March 2025 with its posthumous release planned from the start. The conversation with interviewer Brad Falchuk was kept confidential and unedited until Goodall’s death on October 1, 2025; it became the first episode of the documentary series.
Why was Jane Goodall’s interview released after her death?
Goodall agreed to record the conversation knowing it would be released only after she died. This was not a spontaneous statement made in her final moments: it was a carefully planned interview, made months earlier and held back according to her wishes. The Netflix Tudum account says the footage was kept securely and left unedited until her death.
The Jane Goodall Institute dates her death to October 1, 2025, at age 91, and describes the recording as her final public message. The planned release gives the episode its title and premise, while making clear that its words were recorded in life, not spoken at the moment of death.
When and how did Goodall record it, and who interviewed her?
Goodall recorded the interview in March 2025 with Emmy Award-winning producer Brad Falchuk. According to Tudum, the confidential conversation took place on an empty stage using remote cameras. Its footage remained secured and unedited until the release became possible after her death.

What did Goodall talk about?
The long-form conversation moves across Goodall’s life and work, spirituality, free will, regrets, relationships and death. Rather than offering a single dramatic final statement, it allows her to reflect on those subjects and then address viewers directly about what they can do with their own lives.
Her closing message centers on personal agency, hope and responsibility toward nature. She urges viewers, “Don’t lose hope. If you lose hope, you become apathetic and do nothing.” The Jane Goodall Institute also quotes her direct reminder: “You have it in your power to make a difference.”

How does it inaugurate Famous Last Words?
