Jane Birkin’s original Hermès prototype sold for €8.6 million—reported as $10.1 million—at Sotheby’s Paris on July 10, 2025. That total includes auction fees; the winning bid, or hammer price, was €7 million. It became the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction, surpassing the previous record of $513,040 set in 2021 by a Hermès Kelly. The price was for a singular piece of fashion history, not a standard production Birkin.
What made the original Birkin different?
Hermès made the one-of-a-kind prototype for Jane Birkin. Sotheby’s dates its creation to 1985; the Associated Press reports that Hermès commissioned it in 1984 and delivered it the following year. The dates refer to different stages of the bag’s history, rather than conflicting claims about a regular retail model.
According to the story recounted by Birkin and repeated by Sotheby’s and the AP, she met Hermès artistic director Jean-Louis Dumas on an Air France flight in 1981. After her belongings spilled, she described wanting a larger, more practical bag. The encounter is part of the bag’s reported origin story, not an independently verified account of the flight.
Sotheby’s describes the prototype as black Box leather with gilded brass hardware. Its construction and personal touches set it apart from later commercial Birkins:

These details identify this particular prototype; they should not be assumed to describe standard Birkins.
How it became a record-setting auction
Birkin sold the prototype in 1994 to benefit Association Solidarité Sida, according to Sotheby’s. The AP reports that the bag was auctioned again in 2000 and remained in private hands before its 2025 sale. Sotheby’s characterizes the 1994 donation as the start of Birkin’s tradition of putting luxury objects toward charitable causes.

At Sotheby’s Paris auction on July 10, 2025, the winning bid was €7 million. With Sotheby’s fees, the total reached €8.6 million, reported at the time as $10.1 million. The AP identified the previous handbag auction record as $513,040, paid in 2021 for a Hermès White Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Diamond Retourne Kelly 28. The prototype’s result established a new record.
After the sale, Valuence Holdings disclosed that it had placed the winning bid. Its October 2025 investor presentation put the total at 1.47 billion yen, including fees and expenses, based on currency conversion. The company said it intended to preserve the bag and exhibit it; that statement describes announced plans, not evidence that exhibitions have taken place.

Why did the bag sell for so much?
The auction result attaches an extraordinary price to a combination of features: the prototype’s one-off role in the design’s history, its direct association with Jane Birkin, its distinctive construction and personal markings, and its documented ownership and charity history. Those elements help explain why this is not comparable to an ordinary commercial Birkin, but the available sources do not quantify how much each contributed to the final bid.
AP quoted Sotheby’s Global Head of Handbags and Fashion Morgane Halimi describing the original as “a true one-of-a-kind” and a piece of fashion history. The previous owner, identified by the AP as Catherine B., summarized the appeal this way: “The price is the price of the Hermès story.”

How it compares with Jane Birkin’s later bag
The 2025 auction record was not the only major sale connected to Birkin. Sotheby’s reports that Le Birkin Voyageur, a bag she used in 2003, sold in Abu Dhabi in December 2025 for $2.9 million and describes it as the second most expensive Birkin sold.
