Roy says Heughan gave him no list of instructions. In Season 2 of Outlander: Blood of My Blood, Roy describes Brian Fraser as a more purposeful and independent man who is fighting to get back to Ellen as the 1715 Jacobite Rising approaches. Everything below about Brian’s character is Roy’s own interpretation unless it is marked as episode-level reporting.
What Sam Heughan told Jamie Roy
Roy recalls speaking with Heughan before filming began in 2023. In his account to Men’s Journal, published September 23, 2026, Roy says Heughan did not hand him a set of directions. The advice was to enjoy the experience, because it would go by fast. Roy remembers the line as: “It goes really fast.”
That is a recollection of a private conversation, reported in Roy’s own words, so it should be read as his memory of what was said rather than a quote from Heughan himself. An earlier interview on the same subject, published by Extra on August 4, 2025, covers this advice too, but the September 2026 interview is the more current account of Roy’s views on Season 2.
How Brian changes in Season 2
Roy’s central point is that Brian is not the same man viewers met in Season 1. He frames the change as a deliberate contrast with the earlier version of the character.
#1 Best Overall
From gentle and tentative to purposeful
Roy describes Season 1’s Brian as gentler and, at first, less assertive. As the Jacobite Rising draws closer, that Brian becomes more purposeful. Roy calls the newer version “Brian 2.0,” saying, “It’s almost like Brian 2.0.” He adds that Season 2 lets audiences see “so many different facets” of the character: “We get to see so many different facets of his personality come out in season two.”
Getting through the war to reach Ellen
According to Roy, Brian’s main driver is getting through the war so that he can be with Ellen again. That single goal gives his more forceful behaviour a clear emotional source. Roy presents the change as coming from that longing rather than from ambition for its own sake.
Rank #2
Leadership and recruiting
Roy says Brian takes on more leadership responsibility, including recruiting men for the fight ahead. TV Insider’s September 25, 2026 episode report adds specifics: Brian gathers men with Lord Lovat, visits Ellen, and promises one hundred men to the Jacobite cause. Those are episode-level developments as reported by TV Insider, not details Roy supplied in the Men’s Journal interview.
Ellen and the relationship
Roy characterises Brian and Ellen as having moved on from stolen moments in a forbidden romance. They now behave more like a family unit that makes decisions together. Roy says he and co-star Harriet Slater found how quickly the couple had matured while working through the scripts, rather than charting that growth in advance. In other words, the maturity was something the performers discovered on the page as they went.
Rank #3
Brian’s family as the blueprint
Roy says he drew on Brian’s childhood and family rather than reverse-engineering Jamie Fraser. Two influences stand out in his account. Lord Lovat showed Brian the kind of man he did not want to become. Brian’s mother, in Roy’s view, is the source of much of his gentleness and compassion.
The “boy to a man” line
The headline phrase “He’s gone from a boy to a man” does not appear in the Men’s Journal interview text available for this article, so it should not be attributed to Roy as a direct quote. The closest supported statement is Roy’s account that Brian grew up quickly and became more independent. Readers who see the phrase elsewhere should check its original source before quoting it.
Brian and Dougal
TV Insider’s September 25, 2026 report, under the headline about Brian’s quest to win over Dougal’s trust, says Roy describes respect beginning to develop between Brian and Dougal. This is Roy’s characterisation of an episode-level storyline, reported by TV Insider. It is not a plot summary confirmed by the Men’s Journal interview.

Show context and viewing
TheWrap describes Blood of My Blood as the Outlander prequel centred on Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie in early eighteenth-century Scotland, alongside the story of Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, in the World War I era. Its November 2025 report gave September 18, 2026 as the Season 2 premiere date. That was the date reported at the time, not a confirmed broadcast schedule for every market.
