Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest met after Curtis spotted his photograph in Rolling Stone and told a friend she would marry him. They went on their first date in 1984 and married five months later. Curtis has since described their marriage not as effortless, but as a life built by getting to know one another over time.
How did Jamie Lee Curtis meet Christopher Guest?
In a 2020 conversation with Melanie Griffith for Interview Magazine, Curtis recalled seeing Guest in a photograph in Rolling Stone in 1984. She told her friend Debra Hill that she would marry him, then left her phone number with his agent. He did not call after that first attempt.

Later, after Curtis had ended another relationship, she went to Hugo’s restaurant with Griffith and Griffith’s then-husband. Guest was there too. The two acknowledged that he had received her message; he called Curtis the next day, and they went out a few days later.
When did they marry?
Curtis said they married five months after their first date. In a post marking the anniversary in 2024, she wrote, “40 years ago today I went on my first date with Christopher. We married five months later and started to build our lives.” ABC reported that the couple married in 1984. The milestone refers to the first date, not 40 years of marriage. What has Curtis said about their marriage?
Curtis has spoken warmly about the relationship while also acknowledging its difficulties. In her 2020 Interview Magazine conversation with Griffith, she said, “It’s a marriage: It’s beautiful, difficult, funny, and really sad. It’s everything, because it’s real.”
She also emphasized how little time they had spent together before the wedding: “We didn’t know each other when we married. We had never spent more than four days together consecutively before we got married.” She described marriage as the process of getting to know each other rather than something they had already figured out before making a commitment.

After winning an Emmy in 2024, Curtis joked about the patience and perseverance involved in a long marriage, adding that it takes “a really good dose of hatred.” The Associated Press reported her humorous account of irritation giving way to affection: “All of a sudden you literally want to hate each other. And then the next day, it’s a pretty, sunny day, and the dog does something cute or your child does something cute, and you look at each other, and you’re like, ‘Aw, gosh.’” It was a personal, comic observation, not a formula or advice for other couples.
