Jamie Kellner is often credited with “killing WCW” because, in 2001, he backed cancelling the promotion’s shows on TNT and TBS. That decision ended WCW’s television home and undermined a proposed sale to Fusient Media Ventures. But it was the final blow to a promotion already in decline—not the sole cause of WCW’s problems.
What did Jamie Kellner do to WCW?
Shortly after taking over Turner Broadcasting in 2001, Kellner supported cancelling WCW programming on Turner’s networks. The shows at stake were Monday Nitro on TNT and Thunder on TBS. Contemporary coverage reported the cancellations in March: a TBS spokesperson told NextTV / Broadcasting & Cable that the programs would not appear after March 26, 2001. The Los Angeles Times described scrapping wrestling as one of Kellner’s first major programming decisions as Turner’s new chief executive.
WWE’s later retrospective says Kellner and Turner Entertainment president Brad Siegel made the decision shortly before WCW’s planned Big Bang event. WWE describes Turner’s intended direction as making TNT a drama network and TBS a destination for comedy and sports—an account of the programming rationale, not a verified statement of Kellner’s private thinking. WWE’s WCW history recounts that rationale and the events around the proposed sale.
Why losing Turner television mattered to the proposed sale
Fusient Media Ventures, associated with Eric Bischoff, was the proposed purchaser of WCW. WWE’s retrospective says the transaction was not yet official and that it failed after Turner decided not to keep WCW on its networks. The cancellation therefore damaged a deal whose value depended on continued access to Turner television. It does not establish that Fusient would have completed the purchase or kept WCW viable over the long term.

Why “Kellner killed WCW” is only part of the story
The slogan identifies a decisive event but compresses a longer decline into one executive’s choice. WWE’s historical account says WCW had fallen to a fraction of its former television ratings and was losing millions by 2001. Those are retrospective claims by WWE, not an independent audit of WCW’s finances or ratings.
The scale of WCW’s earlier success helps explain why the cancellation is remembered as a turning point. WWE says Nitro beat Raw for 84 consecutive weeks between May 1996 and March 1998. That figure is WWE’s historical account; it should not be mistaken for an independently recalculated result. The promotion’s later struggles preceded the end of its Turner run.

What happened to WCW after the cancellations?
After Turner ended WCW’s television programming, WWE announced on March 23, 2001 that it had acquired WCW’s brand, tape library, and other intellectual property rights from Turner Broadcasting, then a division of AOL Time Warner. WWE’s announcement described an acquisition of assets and rights—not a continuation of WCW’s Turner television operation.
The sequence matters: the Turner shows were cancelled, the Fusient proposal was undermined, and WWE acquired WCW’s intellectual property. Kellner’s decision ended the promotion’s place on Turner’s channels; it did not, by itself, explain every business problem that had brought WCW to that point.
