Jamie Foxx has said that a brain bleed led to a stroke in April 2023, while he was filming Back in Action in Atlanta. His family initially described the situation only as a “medical complication.” Foxx later recounted the episode in a July 2024 public appearance and in his December 2024 Netflix special. The medical details below are his account as reported by news outlets, not a review of his medical records.
What happened, according to Foxx
Foxx was hospitalized in April 2023 during production of Back in Action in Atlanta. In his December 2024 special, Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…, he said he experienced a brain bleed that led to a stroke. CBS News and NPR reported on his disclosure: CBS News and NPR.
Foxx had offered a shorter account months earlier. At a July 2024 gathering in Phoenix, he said the emergency began with a bad headache on April 11, 2023, and that he did not remember the next 20 days. ABC News reported his remarks: ABC News. His recollection of that period is not a population statistic or an independently verified clinical timeline.

Why the first statement was less specific
Corinne Foxx’s April 2023 statement used the broad phrase “medical complication” and said her father was recovering. It did not name a diagnosis. Foxx’s later account supplied more detail, but those statements serve different purposes: the family’s brief update described the situation at the time, while the special recounted his experience retrospectively. What is not established by these reports
- The reports do not provide independent access to Foxx’s medical records; the brain bleed and stroke details should therefore be attributed to his account.
- They do not establish a cause beyond what Foxx disclosed. Online speculation is not evidence of another diagnosis.
- Historical coverage of the 2023 emergency and his later recollections does not establish his current clinical status as of October 8, 2026.
