The Television Academy identifies Dawson Leery as Van Der Beek’s best-known role and Mox as his biggest film role. The rest of the list is a curated selection across genres, not a claim that these are his ten most acclaimed projects. (Television Academy)
1. Dawson’s Creek (1998–2003)
Dawson Leery is the role that defines Van Der Beek’s television career: an earnest aspiring filmmaker growing up alongside his friends in the fictional town of Capeside. The series ran on The WB from 1998 to 2003, according to the Associated Press. (Associated Press)
The show’s lasting association with its star is easy to understand. Van Der Beek described the effect of playing Dawson for years: “It ran for so long. That’s a lot of hours playing one character in front of people. So it’s natural that they associate you with that.” (Associated Press)

2. Varsity Blues (1999)
In this high-school football drama, Van Der Beek plays Jonathan “Mox” Moxon, a backup quarterback pushed into the spotlight. It is his most prominent film role, according to the Television Academy, and it made the strongest big-screen counterpoint to Dawson. (Television Academy)
The role also brought major breakthrough recognition: ABC News reports that Van Der Beek won the 1999 MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Male Performance and the 1999 Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie Breakout Star for Varsity Blues. (ABC News)
3. The Rules of Attraction (2002)
This adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel gives Van Der Beek a sharply different lead role in a dark campus drama. It is a useful next watch after Varsity Blues: the contrast shows him moving away from the earnest young-man image rather than simply repeating it. Apple TV’s filmography lists the film among his credits. (Apple TV)
4. Texas Rangers (2001)
In this Western, Van Der Beek appears in an ensemble cast as the story follows young men joining the Texas Rangers. The film is a less familiar choice than his two breakthrough titles, but it is worth including for the genre change: it places him in a period action setting rather than contemporary teen life. His credit is listed in Apple TV’s filmography. (Apple TV)

- Let the games begin! Own the genre-defining Saw horror series in all its grisly glory. Five-disc set includes: Saw (2004), Saw II (2005), Saw III (2006), Saw IV (2007), Saw V (2008), Saw VI (2009), Saw: The Final Chapter (2010) and Saw 3D: The Final Chapter (2010).
- Genre: Horror
5. Scary Movie (2000)
Van Der Beek’s appearance in this horror-comedy parody belongs on a list about range, not leading roles. The film plays for laughs with the conventions of teen horror, making it a quick way to see him in a deliberately comic context. Apple TV includes it among his film credits. (Apple TV)
6. Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)
Van Der Beek makes a self-referential appearance in Kevin Smith’s comedy, joining a film that sends up Hollywood and its own cast of familiar faces. The joke depends on audiences recognizing him from his teen-drama fame, but the performance is knowingly loose rather than an attempt to reproduce Dawson. The Atlantic highlights the appearance as part of his comic work. (The Atlantic)
7. Formosa Betrayed (2009)
This political thriller takes Van Der Beek into a more serious, adult genre. It is a supporting entry in his filmography rather than one of his defining hits, but it demonstrates the variety of projects he took on beyond teen drama and parody. Apple TV lists the film among his credits. (Apple TV)

Van Der Beek joined this crime procedural as FBI Special Agent Elijah Mundo. The part places him in an ensemble series built around investigations, a clear shift from the coming-of-age television that made him famous. The Associated Press identifies CSI: Cyber among his later television roles. (Associated Press)

9. What Would Diplo Do? (2017)
In this short-lived comedy, Van Der Beek plays a fictionalized version of the DJ Diplo. The premise lets him lean into self-mockery and create a comic persona distinct from his earlier earnest leading roles. The Atlantic points to the series as a notable self-referential performance. (The Atlantic)
10. Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23 (2012–2013)
Van Der Beek plays an exaggerated, self-parodying version of himself in this sitcom, turning his celebrity image into part of the joke. It is a recurring comedic role rather than a conventional drama performance, and a useful stop for viewers interested in how he could subvert the expectations attached to Dawson. The series is included in ABC News’s account of his television career. (ABC News)
Where to start if you know him only as Dawson
- For his career-defining performance: begin with Dawson’s Creek.
- For his key movie role: watch Varsity Blues.
- For a darker dramatic contrast: choose The Rules of Attraction.
- For comedy and self-parody: try Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back or What Would Diplo Do?.
- For a later television genre shift: sample CSI: Cyber.
Prime Video has a Dawson’s Creek listing that identifies six seasons and Van Der Beek in the cast, but that listing alone does not establish availability in every country or whether viewing is included with a subscription. Check the terms shown in your region. (Prime Video) A complete-series DVD is also listed by Walmart and Mill Creek Entertainment; check those retailers for current stock and edition details.
