The clearest reported story order for James Gunn’s connected DCU is Lanterns’ 2016 scenes → Clayface → Creature Commandos → Superman → Peacemaker season two → Supergirl → Lanterns’ 2026 flash-forward. That is in-universe chronology, not release order, and it does not supply an exact year for every story.
What counts as the DCU?
Here, “DCU” means the shared screen continuity developed by DC Studios—not every film, show, animation project, or game based on DC characters. DC’s initial Chapter One announcement described connected storytelling across projects and media, while distinguishing separate Elseworlds productions such as Joker and Matt Reeves’ The Batman films. The studio also called its slate a flexible plan, not a fixed schedule. DC’s 2023 Chapter One announcement
That distinction matters: The Batman and its sequel do not belong in this DCU chronology. DC’s 2025 overview likewise excluded projects confirmed to be outside the shared universe, including the then-planned 2027 The Batman sequel. DC’s 2025 overview
James Gunn’s DCU timeline in chronological order
The following is the reported story chronology, based on the available placement of the projects. It is a relative sequence, not a fully dated calendar; the timeline guide does not establish precise in-universe dates for every entry. GamesRadar’s DCU timeline guide

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. - Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Lanterns — 2016 scenes. The series includes scenes placed in 2016. Its later scenes belong much further along this list.
- Clayface. The timeline guide places the story before Superman, but does not identify its in-universe year.
- Creature Commandos. The animated series is placed before Superman. Animation is part of the connected DCU, so it belongs in the screen chronology.
- Superman. DC introduced the film as the launch of its connected DCU. In the reported chronology, it follows Creature Commandos.
- Peacemaker season two. The season follows Superman in the reported story order, and DC’s 2025 overview connected the series to the shared universe.
- Supergirl. The reported chronology places it after Peacemaker season two.
- Lanterns — 2026 flash-forward. The series’ later scenes are placed in 2026, after the other entries in this sequence.
The two Lanterns placements are separate story blocks within one series, not two different releases. The list also should not be read as assigning an exact calendar date to Clayface or to entries whose in-universe year is unspecified.
Chronological order versus release order
Release order preserves the sequence in which audiences encounter projects; chronological order follows when their stories happen. The best-known divergence is Clayface: DC’s 2025 overview expected it in theaters on September 11, 2026, while the chronology guide places its story before Superman. A release date is not a story date.

DC’s 2025 overview also announced June 26, 2026, as the theatrical date for Supergirl. Those dates were announced or expected in that 2025 source; they should not be mistaken for a current release ledger. The chronology above follows reported in-universe placement rather than the dates audiences can watch each title. DC’s 2025 release overview
How certain is this timeline?
The order is more useful than a calendar of invented dates. The chronology guide supplies placement and approximate years for some entries, but says exact in-universe dates are not available for every project. In particular, it identifies Clayface as preceding Superman without giving a story year. Treat the sequence as a reported chronology, not a date-by-date official studio timeline.

Production plans can shift too. In January 2023, DC Studios co-chairman and co-CEO Peter Safran described the announced slate this way: “This is a general timeline, but there will be flexibility within it.” DC’s original slate announcement
Does the DCU continue the old DCEU?
The DCU is a new shared screen continuity, but that does not mean every earlier DCEU film is a required prequel or that the old and new universes connect one-to-one. DC’s announcement established the new shared-universe framework; the reported timeline does not make every prior DC film part of it. Where a specific character or story carries over material from an earlier production, consider that case on its own rather than adding the entire DCEU to this list.

Optional reading: the comic behind Supergirl
DC named Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as an influence on its planned Supergirl story. The comic is an optional way to explore that inspiration, not a prerequisite for understanding the screen chronology and not a guide to the film’s place in DCU continuity.
