Franco said he still loved Rogen and had tried to reach out. Rogen had said in 2021 that he did not plan to work with Franco at that time; his later comment on Franco’s remarks addressed the online reaction, not the state of their private relationship.
What James Franco said about Seth Rogen
While promoting Hey Joe at the Rome Film Festival, Franco told Variety on October 26, 2024, that he and Rogen were no longer in touch. “I haven’t talked to Seth. I love Seth, we had 20 great years together, but I guess it’s over,” Franco said. He added, “And not for lack of trying. I’ve told him how much he’s meant to me.”

That was Franco’s description of the friendship. It does not establish the full state of their private communications, and Rogen did not make the same declaration.
What Seth Rogen has said
His 2021 comments about working together
In 2021, Rogen said he did not plan to work with Franco “right now.” In an interview with The Sunday Times, quoted by Variety, Rogen said the allegations against Franco had changed their relationship and dynamic. He also said he had “no pity” for himself in the situation, noting that it was more painful and difficult for others involved.

In February 2025, Rogen said he had not been following the online discussion of Franco’s remarks: “Honestly, I absorb so little media that it really wasn’t on my radar.” That comment did not explain whether he and Franco had spoken privately or confirm or dispute Franco’s account.
How their relationship changed
Franco and Rogen began working together on Freaks and Geeks in 1999 and later appeared together in projects including Pineapple Express, This Is the End, and The Disaster Artist. Variety identifies The Disaster Artist as their last project together.
Rank #2
Their professional distance followed sexual-misconduct allegations against Franco that surfaced in 2018. Several women, including former students at Franco’s acting school, made allegations; Franco denied them. Two former students later sued, and The Independent reported in 2025 that the lawsuit was settled in 2021 for a reported $2.23 million. A settlement is not a court finding that the allegations were proven.
