“Jamal Kudu” is the Hindi-language reworking that Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal uses to introduce Bobby Deol’s character, Abrar. Indian press reporting from December 2023 says the song was inspired by an older Iranian song, “Jamaal Jamaaloo,” which composer Harshvardhan Rameshwar reimagined for the film. The earlier song’s history, including its origin and early performance, comes from reporting rather than from a primary recording or archival record that could be checked independently.

Two songs with related but different titles

The two titles are close enough to be confused, and they are rendered differently. “Jamaal Jamaaloo” is the name given to the older Iranian song in reporting. “Jamal Kudu” is the title of the film version heard in Animal. Readers searching for the meaning of “Jamal Kudu” or its origin are usually asking about the film track, but the story of the song begins with the earlier one.

The film track is best understood as an adaptation. Reporting describes it as a reworking of the older melody and material, not as a straight reproduction of the original recording. The Indian Express and Hindustan Times both give this broad account in their December 2023 coverage.

Where the older song comes from, according to reporting

The Indian Express and Hindustan Times, both writing in December 2023, report the following about the earlier song. Each point is a reported account, and neither outlet points to a primary source that confirms it.

  • Language and region: The song is described as Iranian or Persian, with its lyrics said to come from southern Iran.
  • Early performance: It is reported that the Shirazi Choir of Kharazemi Girls High School first sang the song in the 1950s.
  • Literary source: The song is said to be adapted from a poem of the same name by the Iranian poet Bijan Smandar.
  • Everyday use: The song is said to have become popular at weddings.

Shiraz, the city named in the choir account, is in southern Iran, which fits the regional claim. That fit does not confirm the choir, the date, or the poem. No original recording, archival listing, or copy of the poem was identified in the reporting, and no statement from a composer, archive, or Iranian cultural body was found to confirm these details.

What the film version does with it

In Animal, “Jamal Kudu” is tied to a wedding sequence that introduces Abrar, played by Bobby Deol. Reporting from The Indian Express says the song is used in this way, and the complete track was released by T-Series on YouTube on December 6, 2023, five days after the film opened in theatres on December 1, 2023.

Deol has described how the song came about. In a Filmfare interview quoted by The Indian Express on December 9, 2023, he said:

“I still remember, Sandeep [Reddy Vanga] had already found the music, a Persian song and he said that it will be played during my introduction, it’s a wedding sequence so it required dancing.”

His account shows that the director had already chosen the Persian song before Deol came to the scene. It also shows that the sequence was built around dancing, which is why the track is staged as a celebration rather than as a quiet ballad.

What the lyrics mean

The Indian Express gives a loose English rendering of the lyric. In it, the singer appeals to a black-eyed beloved not to break the singer’s heart. The beloved then leaves, and the singer is left lovesick, described as being “like Majnu.” Hindustan Times offers a similar rough translation.

These are working paraphrases, not a verified translation. The reporting does not name a qualified translator, and it does not offer a dialect analysis. Anyone who needs the exact sense of the words should consult a Persian-language source or a translator with expertise in Iranian folk poetry, because a single English version cannot settle the meaning.

What is established and what is not

The following points are supported by reporting in Indian outlets from December 2023. They are useful as context, but they should be read as reported claims.

  • The film track “Jamal Kudu” is reported to be a reworking of the Iranian song “Jamaal Jamaaloo.”
  • Harshvardhan Rameshwar is credited with the reimagining.
  • Bobby Deol’s introduction as Abrar uses the song in a wedding sequence.
  • The early history of the earlier song, including the choir, the 1950s date, and the Bijan Smandar poem, is reported but not verified by a primary recording or archival record.

The reporting did not establish any current viewing or listening figures. The Indian Express cited a YouTube view count in its 2023 article, but that number was a snapshot from that time and should not be treated as current reach.

Readers who want to check the history further would need the original recording, the poem, or a documented performance record. None of those were identified in the reporting reviewed.

The reporting cited here comes from December 2023. Anyone reading this article in or after 2026 should treat the film release details as settled and the older-song history as a claim still awaiting primary documentation.
