Its connection to Donald Trump and the modern media environment comes through a separate, recorded discussion: on February 16, 2024, Jake Tapper asked crisis-management specialist Lanny Davis how Trump, social media and partisan cable news have shaped the way scandals unfold. Davis offered analysis, not a neutral finding—and the distinction matters.
What is United States of Scandal?
CNN announced United States of Scandal with Jake Tapper as a six-episode CNN Original Series using archival footage and interviews to revisit political scandals. Its central questions are why powerful people break rules and what happens when they are caught. The first two episodes premiered on February 18, 2024, with the series scheduled to air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT. CNN’s January 18, 2024 announcement describes the format and launch.
Tapper, CNN anchor and host, said revisiting the cases offered “a surreal chance to go back and talk to the major players and unpack what actually happened, getting at the real truths and the confounding motivations and decisions.” The series is a retrospective on political scandals broadly; CNN did not describe it as a series specifically about Trump.
People and cases featured
CNN’s launch announcement names Rod Blagojevich, Rielle Hunter, Jim McGreevey and Valerie Plame among the interview subjects. In Tapper’s February 16 preview, he also discusses former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford and includes an excerpt featuring Blagojevich. These names are examples from the cited materials, not a complete episode-by-episode list.

What did Tapper and Lanny Davis say about Trump and scandal?
In a February 16, 2024 segment of The Lead with Jake Tapper, Tapper asked Davis: “Do you think Donald Trump has changed anything about scandals and how people respond to them?” Davis answered that Trump had changed the political response and said Trump did not follow the usual crisis-manager advice to tell the truth. That is Davis’s assessment in the conversation, not an independently established conclusion about Trump. The CNN transcript records the exchange.
The segment also considers whether social media and partisan cable news make it easier for people to defend a politician facing damaging scrutiny. Davis said social media speeds the spread of damaging facts and characterized partisan media spaces as echo chambers. Those are his views in the interview; the transcript does not establish them as measured effects or present a broader study of media behavior.

What crisis-management advice did Davis give?
Davis described a crisis-management maxim: get the facts out early and on your own terms. He identified criminal-defense counsel as an exception, distinguishing reputational crisis management from legal strategy. The exchange is a discussion of Davis’s professional approach, not legal guidance for people facing an investigation or legal claim.
What is in season two?
CNN announced a second season in February 2025. Its announcement describes cases involving Anna Delvey, cyclist Lance Armstrong and his former teammate and whistleblower Floyd Landis, and Enron whistleblower Sherron Watkins. CNN credits The Intellectual Property Corporation (IPC), part of Sony Pictures Television, as the production company; its launch announcement lists Tapper as host, Gil Marsden as showrunner, and IPC’s Aaron Saidman and Eli Holzman among the executive producers. CNN’s February 6, 2025 season announcement provides those details.
