Anmol Sidhu’s Punjabi-language debut feature Jaggi is a bleak rural drama about sexual abuse, bullying and the shame that restrictive ideas of masculinity can foster. Its school-age protagonist becomes vulnerable after disclosing an intimate difficulty and being treated as different. The film draws on incidents Sidhu said he encountered, but it is a fictionalized composite—not a literal account of one person’s life.
What is Jaggi about?
Set in rural Punjab, Jaggi follows a vulnerable young man subjected to sexual abuse and bullying. The film places his experience within a social environment marked by gender segregation, silence around sexual matters and a gap in communication between generations. Rather than treating the abuse as an isolated event, it explores how stigma and violence affect Jaggi and the people around him.
Director Anmol Sidhu has stressed that the film is not an equation of homosexuality with violence. In a 2022 interview with Scroll, he said, “The film isn’t homophobic, nor am I.” He described its concern as men who feel misunderstood and exploited and are unable to protect themselves. The distinction matters: the story examines how assumptions about sexuality can become another means of ridicule and harm.
Is Jaggi based on a true story?
Jaggi is inspired by incidents Sidhu said he witnessed or heard about, but the accounts he gave describe a composite, fictionalized story rather than a one-to-one dramatization. In a 2022 interview with The Indian Express, he said personal experiences of abuse that were rarely discussed openly helped inspire the film. The article also reported on letters he had encountered from a young man with erectile dysfunction who was ridiculed and harassed because others assumed he was homosexual, then pressured into marriage. That account is not evidence that the film is the letter-writer’s biography or that he is its sole subject.

Sidhu’s later descriptions differ on how many incidents informed the script: in one 2024 interview he referred to drawing together two or three stories; in another, he described five or six incidents mixed with fictional elements. The safe conclusion is that the film combines multiple experiences and invention. As he put it to The Tribune in June 2024, “It’s based on facts but there are also fictional inputs.”
What is the film’s style and tone?
The film uses long takes and unbroken sequences to create an immediate, observational feel. Scroll’s 2022 preview describes an opening seven-minute uninterrupted sequence featuring Jaggi shortly before his wedding. Sidhu told The Tribune that limited equipment led the team to shoot many scenes in single takes, and that he preferred long shots for realism.
